RC3 Brings SimplyMEPIS 8.5 Close to Final Release
MEPIS has released SimplyMEPIS 8.5.00, RC3 of MEPIS 8.5, now available from MEPIS and public mirrors. The ISO files for 32 and 64 bit processors are SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.5.00-rc3_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.5.00-rc3_64.iso respectively. Deltas are also available.
Warren Woodford reported: “We’ve updated the kernel to 126.96.36.199. The release notes from the Linux Kernel Team indicated that they have been hard at work making improvements. We have changed the Live media to use isolinux. This gave us the opportunity to add a hardware exploration tool to the boot options. Also we’ve expended the number of languages that can be selected at live boot. Soon we expect to take advantage of this to build a larger international Live media release, that will have appropriate KDE localizations built-in.”
Woodford continued: “There have been a number of improvements to the MEPIS Assistants. The autostart docs on CD and the MEPIS Manual have been updated. Community member Marcos Del Puerto has contributed two new System Center utilities one for configuring ndiswrapper and the other, called MEPIS Welcome, to help new users get started with the MEPIS experience.”
In other news, Donna South, who has operated the MPEISLovers Forum for almost 6 years, is stepping down. The site is in the process of being rehosted at a MEPIS server. At this time, a new permanent admin has not been selected. Warren said: “we’re very grateful for Donna’s years of support. She deserves a break.”
