Adam Williamson, working on the Fedora port, said in his blog that since his Unity work was entirely voluntary and his work ethic fluctuates, he has lost motivation for the moment. He mentions as other reasons; an upstream bug in Unity that the maintainer promised to look at ‘after Christmas’, and his proper work that Red Hat pays him to do.

Nelson Marques who was working on the openSUSE port stopped, he says, because of frustration at trying to implement Unity. He also mentioned lack of time to work on the port and upstream problems. He says the branch of Compiz the compositing manager being used, simply is not yet stable enough.
