Linus Torvalds uses Fedora 9

Fedora Linux

Linus Torvalds:

‘I’ve used different distributions over the years. Right now I happen to use Fedora 9 on most of the computers I have, which really boils down to the fact that Fedora had fairly good support for PowerPC back when I used that, so I grew used to it. But I actually don’t care too much about the distribution, as long as it makes it easy to install and keep reasonably up-to-date. I care about the kernel and a few programs, and the set of programs I really care about is actually fairly small.

And when it comes to distributions, ease of installation has actually been one of my main issues - I’m a technical person, but I have a very specific area of interest, and I don’t want to fight the rest. So the only distributions I have actively avoided are the ones that are known to be “overly technical” - like the ones that encourage you to compile your own programs etc.

Yeah, I can do it, but it kind of defeats the whole point of a distribution for me. So I like the ones that have a name of being easy to use. I’ve never used plain Debian, for example, but I like Ubuntu. And before Debian people attack me - yeah, I know, I know, it’s supposedly much simpler and easier to install these days. But it certainly didn’t use to be, so I never had any reason to go for it. ‘

Announcing the Fedora OLPC Special Interest Group

Posted on July 21st, 2008 in Fedora by freesoftnews
Fedora

The engineers at OLPC are busy building an educational experience for the kids of the world.  They are basing their excellent work on Fedora.

Their time is stretched perilously thin.  Every hour an overworked OLPC engineer spends doing Fedora work is an hour they could be spending doing something else.  We in the Fedora community can therefore have a huge, direct, and immediate impact on the success of the OLPC project.

Fedora Unity releases updated Fedora 9 Re-Spin

Posted on July 21st, 2008 in Fedora by freesoftnews
Fedora

The Fedora Unity Project is proud to announce the release of new ISO Re-Spins (DVD) of Fedora 9.

These Re-Spin ISOs are based on the officially released Fedora 9 installation media and include all updates released as of July 18th, 2008. The ISO images are available for i386 and x86_64 architectures via Jigdo starting Sunday, July 20th, 2008 (or, “right now”).

We were unable to include CD Image sets this time, due to problems we are experiencing ordering the packages and sorting them amongst the different discs in the set. A default installation would have required all discs.

With this particular Re-Spin though, we address the following problems:

- #445517, Anaconda crashed during selecting packages (installation mode); Translation of plural in Russian made anaconda fail during the selection of packages, if the installation was done in Russian

- #445974, minstg2 installs fail - missing /usr/sbin/lspci

We would like to give a special thanks to the following for testing this respin within 2 days

- Harley-D             Dana Hoffman Jr
- zcat                 Jason Farrell
- Sonar_Guy            Scott Glaser
- Southern_Gentleman   Ben Williams
- kanarip              Jeroen van Meeuwen

Fedora Unity has taken up the Re-Spin task to provide the community with the chance to install Fedora with recent updates already included.
These updates might otherwise comprise more than 1.91 GByte of downloads for a full install, and an additional 265.69 MByte for pulled in dependencies.

This is a community project, for and by the community. You can contribute to the community by joining our test process.

A full list of bugs, packages and changelogs that have been updated in this Re-Spin can be reviewed on:

http://spins.fedoraunity.org/changelogs/20080718/

Go to http://spins.fedoraunity.org/spins to get the bits!

If you are interested in helping with the testing or mirroring efforts, please contact the Fedora Unity team.

Contact information is available at http://fedoraunity.org/ or the #fedora-unity channel on the Freenode IRC Network (irc.freenode.net).
To report bugs in the Re-Spins please use http://bugs.fedoraunity.org/

Early Fedora 10 Artwork

Posted on July 14th, 2008 in Fedora by freesoftnews
Fedora

Since I did a look at Ubuntu’s early concept art and since I am usually very impressed by Fedora’s final art, I decided that it would make sense to take a look at what has appeared on the Fedora Art Team wiki. I have actually been waiting a few days to do this, since, as of just a few days ago, there were not enough submissions that I liked to talk about. My point is that there has been a new theme submission every one to two days, which is really impressive. Now on to the art:

Fedora, Slackware, Debian… and Philosophy

Posted on July 12th, 2008 in Debian, Fedora, Slackware by freesoftnews
Debian Fedora Slackware

I have been quiet about Linux this week because I have been busy trying several new versions. In the process, I have learned quite a bit more, and started to think about the philosophy behind Linux, operating system choices, and Free / Open Source software in general.

The first thing that became clear to me this week, although I already knew it on a more superficial level, was that Linux distributions run across a sort of a scale from easy to install and use to complex to install and requiring a lot of manual setup and configuration.

We are pleased to announce the release of Fedora Directory Server 1.1.1.  This release is primarily a bug fix release, but does contain some new features, mostly to support freeIPA.

Binary packages are available for Fedora 7, 8, 9, and rawhide.  NOTE:  Fedora 6/RHEL5 binaries are not yet available.  They will be shortly.

How to upgrade:

yum upgrade fedora-ds-base

No further setup should be required.  This should restart the server - if not, a manual restart (service dirsrv restart) is required for the new code to take effect.

Info about FUDCon Boston (please read)

Posted on June 2nd, 2008 in Fedora by freesoftnews
Fedora

Hi all,

As we begin the homestretch around finalizing FUDCon Boston, I wanted to clarify a few things about the importance of pre-registering, and also about the travel and hotel sponsorships.

FUDCon Boston has a number of constraints on its budget, including:

1) Signage at the Hynes Convention center during the two days we are there.

2) Snacks and drinks at the Hynes Convention center, only for those who have pre-registered on the FUDCon page (and who will therefore receive some sort of badge).

3) Tshirts, again, only guaranteed for those who have pre-registered, though there may be extras, depending on the way the price points break down.

4) Breakfast and lunch at the Saturday BarCamp at Boston University, again for those who have pre-registered.

5) Security and facilities at Boston University.

6) FUDPub (space and 1 round of drinks free).

7) Travel and hotel sponsorship, as appropriate.  We have made it a habit of sponsoring community travel and lodging at the last 3 (including this one) North American FUDCons, at least.  We are doing it again this time.  The number of people whom we would like to sponsor is always higher than the number that our budget allows us to sponsor.

For FUDCon Boston, all of the sponsorships that we are doing have already been finalized, and I’ll be re-confirming that with each person in the next 48 hours, but you already know who you are.

We’ve been able to sponsor a number of community members for this FUDCon, all from North America.  Since we are globalizing FUDCons this year, we plan to try to spend our sponsorship money on people who are already geographically close to each location, to maximize efficiency. As such, European contributors will be sponsored for the Europe FUDCon in September, and Asia/India/Australia contributors will be sponsored for the APAC FUDCon currently in planning stages for next January.

We’ve currently got 97 people pre-registered for FUDCon Boston, which is a great number, since past FUDCons have suggested that about 50 people show up day-of who didn’t bother to pre-register.

If there are any questions about FUDCon Boston, please contact myself and Paul Frields.

Looking forward to seeing all of you,
Max

Cooperative Bug Isolation for Fedora 9

Posted on May 19th, 2008 in Fedora by freesoftnews
Fedora

The Cooperative Bug Isolation Project (CBI) is now available for Fedora 9.  CBI (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/) is an ongoing research effort to find and fix bugs in the real world.  We distribute specially modified versions of popular open source software packages.  These special versions monitor their own behavior while they run, and report back how they work (or how they fail to work) in the hands of real users like you.  Even if you’ve never written a line of code in your life, you can help make things better for everyone simply by using our special bug-hunting packages.

We currently offer instrumented versions of Evolution, The GIMP, GNOME Panel, Gnumeric, Nautilus, Pidgin, Rhythmbox, and SPIM.  Download at <http://www.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/downloads/>.  We support yum, apt, and many other RPM updater tools; see <http://www.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/downloads/repo-config.html> for customized configuration help for any of our supported distributions and updater tools.  Or just download and install <http://www.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/downloads/rpm/fedora-9-i386/RPMS.tools/cbi-package-config-9-10.i386.rpm> to automatically configure most popular RPM updaters to use the CBI repository.

It’s that easy!  Tell your friends!  Tell your neighbors!  The more of you there are, the more bugs we can find.

We still offer CBI packages for Fedora 1/2/4/5/6/7/8 as well.  When and if you decide to upgrade to Fedora 9, we’ll be ready for you.  Until then, your participation remains valuable even on older distributions.

– Dr. Ben, the CBI guy
