New law says computer repair guys in Texas must also be licensed private investigators!!!

Posted on July 2nd, 2008 in Fun, Hardware, News by freesoftnews
Fun Hardware News

If you want to repair computers in Texas then you need to complete a three year apprenticeship and get your private investigator license first. Either that or face a year in jail, according to an amendment to the Texas Occupations Code…

The Institute for Justice has filed a lawsuit on behalf of computer repair guy Mike Rife against the Texas Private Security Bureau (PSB) arguing that a new law unconstitutionally denies computer repair companies the right to work in their chosen profession. This based around the Texas Constitution which protects the right of Texans to earn an honest living without unreasonable government interference.

How to write a Gnome Application

Posted on June 9th, 2008 in Fun, Gnome by freesoftnews
Fun Gnome

By popular demand, a guide to writing a Gnome app:

* Find some reasonable app from another platform (Windows, Mac, KDE, whatever, but preferably, Mac). Bonus points if there are already 3 other gtk-based alternatives who don’t want to integrate with Gnome.
* You MUST have a g somewhere in the gname. Extra credit if you can make it a “gn”. If you can use “gnu” or “gno” or “gna” you’re are gnawesome, and your app is already worth using. Make sure the name of your app bears no relevance to what it actually does. Also, NEVER document if the g is pronounced with the hard-g sound.

How to Pick a Good Gift for a Geeky Dad

Posted on June 9th, 2008 in Fun by freesoftnews
Fun

There’s nothing like a good battle to liven up the conversation on the Linux blogs, and that’s just what happened last week thanks to the resurgence in the controversy over OOXML. Following appeals by South Africa, India, Brazil and Venezuela, the fate of OOXML — and indeed standards-making in general — is far from clear. “I think OOXML will cause the greatest wave of change to how national standards bodies conduct themselves that we have seen in the last decade or two,” wrote IBM’s Bob Sutor on his blog.

Top 5 ways not to be a Linux evangelist

Posted on May 30th, 2008 in Fun, Linux by freesoftnews
Fun Linux

As I ate dinner at a recent LUG meeting, I found myself pleasantly surrounded by a group of people with the same intense passion. We all shared a thorough love for the beneficial and effective Linux operating system.

Yet, as I spoke with two in particular, it became evident to me that perhaps some of the ways in which we in the community evangelize could use some honing. As WJ talked to me about his plan to encourage (his word was “make”) leadership in his organization use more Linux and OSS, I got to thinking that it may be time for another community article.

From my conversations and my own personal perspective I include a list of the top five ways not to evangelize Linux, or perhaps restated, how not to screw up a good thing:

WordPress plugins for multimedia can make your blog more interesting. These four plugins make it possible to automatically generate and configure multimedia, making your site a richer experience for your visitors and for you.

Extension seriesExtension seriesOdiogo is a free service that converts your blog posts into audio podcasts. The Odiogo Listen Button plugin for WordPress makes it easy for your visitors to listen to and even save the audio version of your posts.

To activate Odiogo, you have to sign up and wait for the powers that be to approve your site and convert the posts, a process that could take 48 hours or more. Once you’re approved, Odiogo sends you a feed ID and a link to your audio feed. Download the Listen Button plugin and install it, enter your five-digit feed ID in the administrative section of your WordPress installation, and a small, unobtrusive listen button appears automatically near the top of each post on your site. When clicked, an embedded audio player appears and plays an MP3 file that is a word for word version of the post.

Geeks Making the World Better

“Geeks making the world better one bit at a time.” That’s the playful slogan for the University of North Carolina’s “Maze Day,” during which scores of blind and visually impaired children from across the state came out Wednesday morning to test drive computer programs especially designed for them. The event — held in a labyrinth of rooms on the first and second floors of UNC’s Sitterson Hall — featured about 20 software programs with state-of-the art video game equipment and, in some cases, innovative twists to conventional classics, such as “Braille Twister.”

Moving my mother over to Linux

Posted on February 7th, 2008 in Fun, Linux by freesoftnews
Fun Linux

To save money, I cobbled together a computer for my mother out of cast-offs left over from my own upgrades. She doesn’t need a cutting-edge computer because she’s not a power user, but she does need a reliable machine to run a few basic applications and to access the Internet. I moved my mother from Windows to Ubuntu Linux, and the experience was a surprisingly smooth one.

The machine I gave her sports a 2.2GHz Intel Celeron CPU, 512MB of RAM, and Nvidia MX440 graphics card with 64MB of RAM. It’s not a cutting-edge gaming rig, but it’s an adequate machine for her needs, which include email, Web browsing, music and video playback, photo management, and word processing.

Let me count the ways…an open letter to Linux

Way number 1: You breathe new life into old hardware. They should age PCs in dog years. Here’s a trusted dog year calendar that helped me better determine the age of my Laptop. My three-year old laptop is going on 25 dog years now, and Windows is like the Army, and 25 year old recruits are starting to get too old to put on the front lines. The average Windows PC lasts three to four years, which at best, would give my laptop a little less than a year to accept its demise. Thanks to you, my laptop should get at least another three years in it, three years of happy blissful churning away of bits and bytes.

MakeHuman - Open Source Human Modeler

Posted on January 29th, 2008 in Fun by freesoftnews
Fun

Allow me to introduce the software that will change graphics on the Linux desktop forever. The Linux graphics toolkit has been missing one crucial tool: a way to quickly render human models, similar to the commercial, proprietary Poser. Well, we’ve got that now.

MakeHuman is this fantastic work of software magic. I ran into it over on Eric’s Binary World. So that’s a big one that Eric scooped me on, and he’s reviewed and commented on it as well.

Now, Eric, if you visited that link, is happy to render naked bald women over there. That’s “to each his own” - I kinda got my fill of those after Lieutenant Ilia in the first Star Trek movie. Now, me, when I sit down with a human model renderer, the first thing I think of is drawing an alien freak:
