This week can definitely be summed up as Canonical Week, first with the release of Ubuntu 10.10 and then the release of its sister distros (Kubuntu, Lubuntu, etc.). This time around I took a look at Kubuntu 10.10. My impression of the last release of Kubuntu wasn’t very positive. Well imagine my surprise when I [...] The Kubuntu team is proud to announce the release of 10.10, the latest version of our popular Linux distribution. Kubuntu is one of the Ubuntu distributions and is based on KDE Software. With the combination of its Ubuntu backbone, the amazing KDE Platform and Applications, plus a few unique extras, 10.10 aims to provide the [...] It is almost that time! The next version of Kubuntu 10.10, the Maverick Meerkat, is almost upon us. In preparation for the October 10th release, we are offering users the Release Candidate. This version is appropriate for testing fresh installations and upgrades. As an RC, we are encouraging people to try installing or upgrading to [...] This Friday (20th August) me and Ubuntu translations man David Planella want to spend the day making sure translations in Kubuntu are in tip top shape. Do join us on IRC in #kubuntu-devel if you want to help out. See the wiki page for some things we will be checking. [Discuss Kubuntu Translations QA Day [...] Top Kubuntu developer Aurélien Gâteau (agateau) has been honoured with an Akademy Award for 2010. The Akademy Awards are given out each year at the annual KDE Akademy conference; the jury being formed of previous prize-winners. Aurélien won the award for his work on Gwenview, the image viewing application which ships with Kubuntu. He was [...] The Kubuntu Council is a group of 6 Kubuntu Members who get to vote on membership to Kubuntu Members and occationally other decisions regarding Kubuntu. PC-BSD 8.0 was released last week and while we have already delivered FreeBSD 8.0 benchmarks including against Debian GNU/kFreeBSD and Fedora / Debian / OpenBSD / OpenSolaris for which PC-BSD is based, we took this opportunity to deliver a fresh set of *BSD benchmarks. In this article we have benchmarks of PC-BSD 8.0 x64 against [...] Desktop developers are starting to understand that netbooks need different interfaces than workstations — or even notebooks. The smaller screens on netbooks are a usability challenge, comparable to designing a business card when you’re used to creating full-page ads. 1- Plasma Netbook Technical Preview I’ve been using Kubuntu Jaunty since its release, and quite a bit before that as well (during the beta phase). Generally speaking, I can’t do without it. I use it as my primary operating system for both work and leisure, and I’ve upgrade virtually all of my staff’s laptops to use it as well. For [...] I’ve been using Kubuntu Jaunty since its release, and quite a bit before that as well (during the beta phase). Generally speaking, I can’t do without it. I use it as my primary operating system for both work and leisure, and I’ve upgrade virtually all of my staff’s laptops to use it as well. For [...] The recent Kubuntu Tutorials Day featured five of free software’s finest speakers spreading their knowledge to a large audience. There were talks on Kubuntu, artwork, packaging, as well as an introduction to Ruby. There was also a special guest speaker from Amarok who gave a well received tutorial on scripting Amarok with QtScript. Time for another Kubuntu Tutorials Day. Learn about KDE and Kubuntu development in a helpful atmosphere next Monday from 19:00UTC in the #kubuntu-devel IRC freenode channel. We have a lineup of exciting speakers on a range of topics. Read on for the timetable YES! It took me long enough with all of the work that was going on at the same time, but I would like to present you the ability to test out KDE 4.1 Beta 1 in Kubuntu Hardy right now! It seems we have worked out a majority of the quirks, but I can’t promise [...] A secondary school in Melbourne, Australia, is using KDE on Kubuntu, with KDE’s own Kiosk tool to lock down its library workstations. Implementing a kiosk mode Kubuntu setup allowed Westall Secondary School to save money, exact greater control over security measures, and extend the life of older and previously abandoned hardware without sacrificing performance. The [...] After I had first Kubuntu impressions using a VMware image I finally did it. My SuSE 10.2 partition was wipped out and Kubuntu 7.10 “Gutsy Gibbon” has been installed. This happened several weeks ago. In the meatime I found several pleasant surprises while enjoying a Kubuntu installation for my daily work. However where light is [...] The release schedule for KDE 4 is now clear, and it will be released during the development cycle of Kubuntu 8.04. This new major release is already attracting significant interest from users, and is the focus of most KDE developer effort at this point. The majority of enquiries are now about KDE 4, and an [...] KDE 4.0 Release Candidate 2 was made available yesterday as the last testing release before the final KDE 4.0 build next month. If you’ve been wanting to try out this latest version of KDE 4.0, but aren’t yet ready to fully upgrade, there are Linux LiveCDs already available that integrate KDE 4.0 RC2. Two of [...] I do enjoy the Kubuntu development cycle. Just as I’m starting to feel that my stable, long-configured system is starting to get a little blase, the new version is just around the corner. I eagerly upgraded to Kubuntu Gutsy when it was released on my faithful Vaio TX. Gutsy has been released for a few [...] The Hardy Heron Roadmap has over 130 new ideas that have been proposed thus far. I’ve examined each one of these ideas in detail, threw out the ones that weren’t interesting to me, wrote an explanation for each, and sorted the list into three categories: User Experience, Networking and Security, Support Of course, the juiciest items have [...] |
