First impressions may be fleeting, but I like what I see so far in Xubuntu 12.04. Xubuntu is the only lightweight based Ubuntu version that is getting long term support from Canonical. It features the XFCE 4.8 desktop and also comes with the Ubuntu Software Centre Canonical informed users on March 1st that the first Beta release of the upcoming Xubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) operating system is available for download. Ubuntu has pushed out Long-Term Support releases every two years that are supported for five years (five years for servers, but previously for desktops it was three years, [...] I repeatedly tell on my blog that my laptop has quadro-boot landscape. It became so when I first installed Linux on my hard drive (really installed, not frugal installation that I had for SLAX and Puppy). Latest quadro-boot configuration included Mageia 1 KDE, Debian Squeeze, Fedora 16 KDE and inevitable Windows XP. It included. Then [...] Humanity can take several shapes and forms. Everybody understands it differently. Same for Ubuntu, which is “humanity” in some African languages. Somebody only understands it with Unity interface. Somebody cannot live without KDE, and they are fans of Kubuntu type of “humanity”. Somebody prefer light and easy types of it, and their choice is Xubuntu. [...] October saw the release of the latest version of the Ubuntu family and that includes Xubuntu, the Xfce edition. I’ve just installed Xubuntu 11.10 on my netbook and the experience was rather good. The netbook in question is an eMachines (Acer) model eM350. The specs are: 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of memory and a 160GB [...] There are a few times when, through hard work and diligence, we get things right. The developers and contributors of Xubuntu 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot” believe they have it right. They are proud to announce the release of Xubuntu 11.10, “Oneiric Ocelot”. Through the outstanding efforts of all involved, this sleek and smooth release offered for [...] Xubuntu 11.04 is a fast, stable operating system for older systems or systems that could use the performance boost. The developers are working hard to make Xubuntu 11.10 one of the best Linux distributions yet. They are striving to ensure that everything will work for all users, and instead of many changes, [...] With the extensive Linux power consumption tests that I’ve been carrying out to solve some nasty Linux kernel power regressions and find other areas for optimization, one of the requests that has come in frequently is to compare the power consumption of the KDE, GNOME, Unity, Xfce, and LXDE desktops. After the article earlier this [...] Starting with version 11.04 alpha 2 (to be released on February 3rd), Xubuntu will use a new theme called “Greybird” as the default theme. The GTK theme is inspired by Elementary but there are quite a few differences between Greybird and El… Last week I reviewed Kubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 10.10 over on Desktop Linux Reviews. This week I wanted to look at Xubuntu 10.10. I decided to do a quick look rather than a full-blown DLR review because less has changed in Xubuntu than in the other two distro releases. If you aren’t familiar with Xubuntu, [...] Introduction I downloaded Xubuntu 10.10 RC 1 just after it was announced, and I saved the ISO image on my external USB disk drive. Shortly thereafter I ran the image from Virtualbox OSE and I was very pleased with it. I figured that I would wait a little closer to release time, then install this [...] AND THE WINNER IS … I want to thank all the artists that submitted artwork for Xubuntu Maverick Meerkat, soon to become Xubuntu 10.10. We certainly got some great images from you. The artwork was selected by vote of the Xubuntu Team after some discussion. The actual wallpaper is now in Maverick Meerkat. All of [...] The upcoming release of Ubuntu 10.10 promises a variety of new features for Ubuntu’s desktop and server editions. But it will also bring significant changes for Ubuntu’s lightweight cousin, Xubuntu. Here’s a look at some of the most important updates for the Xfce-based Ubuntu variant, including several that will increase its independence from standard Ubuntu. [...] Come and get me, fanboys. I’m a complainer and a whiner (and a joker, a smoker and a midnight toker), but not without reason. (OK, I’m neither smoker nor toker, but it just sounds so right.) Ubuntu, it’s been a nice ride, and I fully support what your doing in terms of spreading the full-custom [...] Before I go any further, I’d like to thank Ford for the honor of being allowed to post here at Eleven is Louder. This is my first post, so please try to refrain from throwing any large, heavy, or otherwise dangerous objects at me. |
