PCLinuxOS 2007 Review

Posted on June 16th, 2008 in PCLinuxOS by freesoftnews
PCLinuxOS

The last time I looked at PCLinuxOS was version 0.92, which according to DistroWatch was about 3 years ago. I was asked to take a look at it again, so here I go.

I’m aware that this version is pretty old by now (June 2008), but as of this writing it was the latest full non-beta version available. I don’t like to rant on betas. I’m puzzled to see that there has been no obvious word given on when we can expect a new version.

According to this forum post from an administrator on the PCLinuxOS forum, the group was originally gunning toward an April release, but has since not seen the light of day for two more months. I’ll certainly do a rant on it as soon as it’s out.

Linux Shootout: 7 Desktop Distros Compared

Posted on May 5th, 2008 in Linux, MEPIS, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, Suse, Ubuntu by freesoftnews
Linux MEPIS Mandriva PCLinuxOS Suse Ubuntu

We tested openSUSE, Ubuntu 8.4, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva Linux One, Fedora, SimplyMEPIS, and CentOS 5.1. All performed well, and each had at least one truly outstanding feature.

In the last couple of years, desktop-friendly Linux distributions have taken enormous leaps — they’re easier to install, better maintained, and more powerful than ever before. There’s also that many more of them — which means that many more possibilities to sift through.

In this roundup I’ve looked at seven Linux distributions, all mainly aimed at desktop users. Some ought to be household names; some are less widely sung but still worth looking at. All are meant to be top-of-the-line, “throw-and-go” distros for general use, so I paid careful attention to how they behaved on a fairly broad range of hardware — how display, networking, or other default configurations were set to behave both out of the box and after an update (if one was available).

Each of these distributions was installed on five machines:

PCLinuxOS goes the extra mile

Posted on May 1st, 2008 in PCLinuxOS by freesoftnews
PCLinuxOS

Ever since my exploration of the various PCLinuxOS spins, I’ve been impressed with the project. Now that I’m having so much relative success with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, it’s unlikely that I will be running PCLinuxOS on my Gateway Solo 1450 laptop, but a) you never know and b) I’m looking for a good system to install for others, and PCLinuxOS is a top contender in that department.

Since I achieved the holy grail in the world of the Gateway Solo 1450 and Linux, that grail being properly working Suspend/Resume, I know that, at this point in time, Ubuntu is the best distribution for this hardware. But if I could learn more about how Suspend/Resume work, I might be able to level the playing field and run anything I want.

PCLinuxOS Gnome links two worlds

Posted on April 11th, 2008 in Gnome, PCLinuxOS by freesoftnews
Gnome PCLinuxOS

If you’re looking for a GNOME desktop for the popular PCLinuxOS (PCLOS), then newly released PCLinuxOS Gnome might be for you.

PCLinuxOS Gnome is a community-developed Linux distribution built on the official PCLinuxOS MiniMe 2008 distribution, which is a minimized system containing the bare-bones necessities for a running system, a skeletal window manager, and a remastering tool. PCLinuxOS itself, known for its ease of use, beauty, and functionality, is loosely based on Mandriva Linux. It retains the RPM package format, ports the Mandriva Control Center and live installer, and focuses primarily upon KDE. It also contains components from Gentoo, openSUSE, Fedora, Debian, and Ubuntu. The distro’s developers tend to adapt the best elements of some of the best distros available for their own distribution. They tweak, customize, and rebuild each package for PCLOS, creating a fast and stable environment.

Review: PCLinuxOS 2007, GNOME and MiniMe

Posted on February 23rd, 2008 in PCLinuxOS by freesoftnews
PCLinuxOS

What version of Linux has been at the top of the Distrowatch rankings for months now that I’ve never tried until today? PCLinuxOS.

Everybody I know who has runs PCLinuxOS has good things to say about it. Scott Ruecker of LXer and the Los Angeles Daily News’ own City Hall reporter Rick Orlov are among those who have used and liked it.

I couldn’t boot the CD on my test machine (VIA C3-based converted thin client), but on the $0 Laptop (Gateway Solo 1450) it’s booting just fine.

PCLinuxOS is the best Distro

Posted on January 29th, 2008 in PCLinuxOS by freesoftnews
PCLinuxOS

I really like OpenSUSE Linux, but the best distro is PCLinuxOS. If there was ever an OS that could help me ‘throw Windows out the window,’ this is it. Ive tried using Mac as an alternative to Windows, but I guess it just wasn’t for me. At least Apple implores its users to ‘Think Different,’ Microsoft insists everyone ‘be Genuine.’ So what would be their catch-phrase be, ‘Be Authentic?’

Although I like Vista very much, I’m turned off by the Orweillian efforts to ensure my ‘authenticity.’ Even worse than the feeling of being shaken down like a criminal every time I use my computer, is the irritating restrictions placed upon my use.

The PCLinuxOS computer — every damn thing you need for $150

Posted on January 10th, 2008 in Hardware, PCLinuxOS by freesoftnews
Hardware PCLinuxOS

I’m ready to throw down $150 for this deal (plus $15 to boost the memory to 512 MB). There are a smattering of low-cost Linux PC deals out there, but this is absolutely the best. Better than Everex, better than the used stuff at Pacific Geek. Better than Mad Tux. Hell, better than anything. You even get an LCD monitor. The $150 doesn’t include shipping, and I don’t know how much that runs. But holy hell, it’s cheap.

A site called linfx.com, which creates computer graphics for PCLinuxOS, among others, is behind the deal. They’ve also got a less-powerful box for $59 (no monitor, keyboard or other extraneous items).

First Look at PCLinuxOS 2008 ‘MiniMe’ Edition

Posted on January 9th, 2008 in PCLinuxOS by freesoftnews
PCLinuxOS

PCLinuxOS is a Linux distribution originally based on Mandriva (Mandrake) and it’s distributed as a LiveCD. As it evolved, PCLinuxOS took advantage of tools, patches and bug fixes from other distributions as well, such as Gentoo, OpenSuse, Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu. It has the Control Center and install tool from Mandriva, the RPM package system from Fedora, the apt-get and Synaptic package managers from Debian/Ubuntu. I think it’s safe to say that PCLinuxOS is a combination of the best parts from popular distributions, making it sort of ‘the best of the best’. Or at least that’s what it tries to be.

PCLinuxOS has chosen to go with ‘radical simplicity’ which has definitely served it well, judging from its rank on distrowatch (#1, above Ubuntu apparently). It’s also one of those distributions that try to promote Windows2Linux migration. Did it succeed at convincing Windows users to make the switch? I don’t know but I’m sure it should have. It’s a fine looking distribution, it has KDE as the desktop environment which is the closest looking to Windows, all the configuration is done through GUI tools and overall, it’s created in such way that using it is pretty straight-forward.

The Absent PCLinuxOS Release Cycle

Posted on October 24th, 2007 in PCLinuxOS by freesoftnews
PCLinuxOS

During distro comparisons, many call a lack of release cycle for PCLinuxOS one of its negative aspects. In my opinion, this is the most attractive and positive aspects of the small distribution. Not to take away from a distribution that sets a release cycle…I understand that normal release cycles are a must with companies and software engineering. However, I think PCLinuxOS has a unique approach to releases and updates. Allow me a bit of time to show you the method in my madness on this one.

Who’s Hot in Desktop Linux - PCLinuxOS?

PCLinuxOS

Every so often I wander over to Distrowatch to see whose at the top of the leaderboard (calculated byPC Linux OS page views on Distrowatch ) for Linux desktop “popularity”. I fully expected to see Ubuntu at the top and maybe Fedora Core in second place. I was surprised to see PCLinuxOS in the number one position.
