phpBB 3.0.2 released

PHP Software

Hello,

We are very pleased to announce the availability of the phpBB 3.0.2
package. This version has seen numerous stability fixes, performance tweaks
and general bugs fixed. Additionally one minor security-related bug was
fixed.

With this release, we also re-introduced the code changes tutorial. Due to
the different codebase in phpBB3, these are a lot bigger and a lot more
complicated than they ever were in phpBB2 - also the reason why we
introduced the automatic update package and automatic updater in phpBB,
which is able to handle modded boards too by merging differences. We do not
recommend the use of the code changes tutorial - those are meant for
professional users and support teams to help assist users having problems
while updating.

The new WordPress

Posted on April 8th, 2008 in PHP, Software by freesoftnews
PHP Software

How do I like WordPress 2.5? In a word, “wow.”

Its developers promised that WordPress 2.5, released last month, was more than just “a fresh coat of paint.” Instead, they said, 2.5 was a “from the ground up” redesign. The goal was to create a new WordPress that would be powerful but easy to administer. After upgrading my WordPress installation and using the new format, I found that the WordPress development team has done a fabulous job of making WordPress even better than it was. It’s not perfect, but it’s darn close.

Esthetically speaking, 2.5 presents a sleeker, more beautiful administrative back end. Older versions sported an institutional beige, black, and blue color scheme; now, with just a bit of tweaking, the WordPress team presents a pleasing combination of rich brown and muted slate blue that is much easier on the eyes. But colors are not the most important detail in the grand scheme of things.

WordPress 2.5 Review

Posted on March 31st, 2008 in PHP, Software by freesoftnews
PHP Software

I have been blogging for many years. During that time I have used many other platforms including hosted software from BlogCity. TypePad, and Blogger. I also used Moveable Type briefly and a highly customized version of Joomla! (before that MamboCMS). Last fall I switched to WordPress as my primary blog platform. Though I haven’t been bowled over by WordPress I have come to the conclusion that it is the best blogging platform for me because it’s easy-to-use, has the widest variety of features, extensible, and it’s open source (with a thriving community of developers– over 90 developers were credited with contributing to this release).

Yesterday the long awaited and somewhat delayed WordPress 2.5 was released. Today, I updated my installation today and though I had a few problems the upgrade to the new version was definitely worth it.

Drupal 6 keeps getting better

Posted on March 21st, 2008 in PHP, Software by freesoftnews
PHP Software

Drupal is a modular content management system. It allows a user or group of users to construct Web sites, blogs, or forums by providing the framework for users with little or no PHP or database experience. It grows more popular with each new release because it becomes easier to use each new release. Drupal 6.0 (and 6.1) were recently released after a year of development. The new features and improvements make for an impressive content management platform.

The beauty of Drupal is how highly customizable it is. The more PHP you know, the more powerful it becomes. But even if you don’t know any PHP you can build and run a great-looking site by utilizing Drupal’s many built-in and contributed modules as well as the various themes. Some of the sites running Drupal include Warner Brothers Records, Popular Science, and The Onion. If you need help, you can find lots of handy documentation and a friendly user forum on the Drupal Web site.

2.5 Sneak Peek

PHP Software

A customizable dashboard, multi-file upload, built-in galleries, one-click plugin upgrades, tag management, built-in Gravatars, full text feeds, and faster load times sound interesting? Then WordPress 2.5 might be the release for you. It’s been in the oven for a while, and we’re finally ready to open the doors a bit to give you a taste.

For the past few months, we’ve been working with our friends at Happy Cog — Jeffrey Zeldman, Jason Santa Maria, and Liz Danzico — to redesign WordPress from the ground-up. The result is a new way of interacting with WordPress that will remain familiar to seasoned users while improving the experience for everyone. This isn’t just a fresh coat of paint — we’ve re-thought the look of WordPress, as well as how it’s organized so that you can forget about the software and focus on your own creative pursuits.

Here are a few vignettes of what’s in store.

PHP Shell, for secure remote access when SSH isn’t available

Posted on February 19th, 2008 in PHP, Software by freesoftnews
PHP Software

Many companies offer LAMP hosting, but some of the cheaper LAMP providers do not allow SSH access, reserving that feature for higher-paying customers. Without SSH you may think you’ll have trouble executing commands on the hosted server. Not so — PHP Shell allows execution of some commands without having SSH access to the LAMP server.

The only PHP function that PHP Shell requires is proc_open(). If you can execute that function using PHP code, then PHP Shell should work. As PHP Shell is easy to install, the easiest way to find out if you are allowed to execute it is to just install it and see if it runs.

Development open for Drupal 7

PHP Programming Software

Drupal 6 has been in a code freeze for more than 6 months and is almost ready to be released now. We’re only a few bug fixes away from the first final Drupal 6.0 release. Therefore, I just created the DRUPAL-6 CVS branch for Drupal core. This means that while Drupal 6 is being finalized and we prepare for the Drupal 6.0 release, we’ll also start accepting new features and improvements for Drupal 7, the next major version of Drupal.

For maximum effectiveness, feature requests for Drupal 7, should go in the the list of feature requests. In my State of Drupal presentation in Barcelona I hinted about what would be the killer Drupal 7 release according to a survey I conducted. While that list is not exclusive and nothing but a wishlist (not a deliverable), it might be worth a look if you want to help shape the future of Drupal.

If you don’t want to watch the entire video, the community’s collective wishlist looks like this:

Multiple unpatched vulnerabilities in open source CMS Mambo

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in Bugs, PHP, Software by freesoftnews
Bugs PHP Software

SecurityFocus has on Monday reported vulnerabilities in the open source content management system Mambo, which could be exploited by attackers to view confidential information or compromise a system. Four flaws have been found, and as yet no fix has been issued.

The mambots/editors/mostlyce/jscripts/tiny_mce/filemanager/connectors/php/connector.php script fails to correctly filter the content of the file[NewFile][tmp_name] parameter, so that crafted arguments can be used to delete files such as configuration.php on the server. If the administrator has not deleted or renamed the Mambo installation directory, it is even possible to load a remote database by uploading a manipulated configuration file. Attackers could then load arbitrary content into the CMS. For the attack to succeed, the image manager must, however, be located in the web server’s root directory.

MODx: A promising open source CMS

Posted on January 14th, 2008 in PHP, Programming, Software by freesoftnews
PHP Programming Software

MODx, an open source content management system (CMS) and PHP application framework comparable to WordPress or Movable Type, recently won Packt Publishing’s Most Promising Open Source CMS award. The application works with either Apache or Internet Information Services (IIS) and supports almost any browser.

Install MODx

MODx requires that your Web server have PHP and MySQL installed. To install MODx, download and unzip the latest MODx version 0.9.6.1 to a folder on your hard drive. FTP the unzipped files and folders in the MODx directory (e.g., c:\temp\modx-0.9.6.1) to the root of your Web site, then open http://yoursite/install/index.php to begin the installation process, where yoursite is the URL of your Web site.

Select your language (English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, or Swedish), agree to the license terms, and choose whether you want to start a new installation or upgrade an existing install. If you’re upgrading, be sure to save all your unique or customized files, such as images, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) files, and custom snippets, and back up your database before you continue.
