Magento’s Guide to Shop.org

image

With more than 4,000 attendees, 200 exhibitors, and 100 speakers headed to Chicago next week for Shop.org’s 2 ½ day Summit, there are a lot of events to keep track of. We want you to spend less time with your nose in the schedule and more time learning how to rock retail, so we created our own Shop.org Guide.

Monday, September 30
Check-in, throw on your favorite outfit, and then run over to Public House at 7:00 pm. Drinks and food are on us – including the secret signature cocktail from our partners at Guidance. (Tip: RSVP here to guarantee your spot!)

Tuesday, October 1
This is a big day. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

  • 7:45 am: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so be sure to fill up now. (Lakeside Ballroom E354)
  • 8:15 am: Kick off the Summit with the opening keynotes from NRF and Tory Burch. (Lakeside Ballroom E354)
  • 10:15am: Word of mouth is crucial. So crucial, that we’re spreading the word about Jonah Berger’s presentation on “Why Things Catch On”. (Lakeside Ballroom E354)
  • 1:00 pm: Swing by the Expo Hall to get some one-on-one help on your website fro, the pros at Precision Dialogue and e-Tailing Group.
  • 1:30: You’ve got 15 minutes to get to the next session, but stop by Magento’s booth (#603) on the way for a chance to play #MagentoMania. (Unless you don’t want $500, in which case, nevermind?)
  • 1:45: Find out what 15 things you can do to make more money next week in this breakout session with Razorfish, Mass Relevance, and more. (Room E353)
  • 3:30: One more breakout session before the reception. You can do this! We recommend this one. It’s all about the experience. (Room E450 A)
  • 6:00 pm: You did it! Now go celebrate your hard day’s work. Head over to the Field Museum for the reception. There are even free shuttles from Lakeside Center.

Wednesday, October 2

  • 7:45: You’re two days into this event. Breakfast is crucial. (Lakeside Ballroom E354)
  • 8:15: Soak up some words of wisdom from the woman herself, Shop.org’s Vicki Cantrell. Then enjoy the comfort of your seat a little longer and stay until 9:30 to learn more about the importance of your Digital DNA. (Lakeside Ballroom E354)
  • 10:15: Where do you go from here? Good question. Find out in this panel with OpenSky, Long Future Media, Wanelo, and Trunk Club. Bonus: You can still stay in your seat! (Lakeside Ballroom E354)
  • 12 pm: Have you played #MagentoMania yet? Swing by while everyone else is off at lunch for your chance at $500 (booth 603).
  • 1:15: We think Nike’s done a pretty good job at… well, everything. American Express, Saks, and HSN aren’t too shabby either. Learn how to connect customers to what they love from this expert panel. (Room E450 A)
  • 2:15: Time for an afternoon pick-me-up. Productivity: Brought to you by coffee.
  • 3:00 pm: Last breakout session of the event! We recommend checking out this promising session with Threadless, Sephora, and more. (Room E451 AB)

Whew, that’s a lot of great sessions. See you Monday night at Public House!

We also incorporated the recent USPS API patch, DHL code updates, and the latest Redis backend cache code, now called Cm_Cache_Backend_Redis. We have also included Cm_RedisSession, a Redis session storage module.

The Google Analytics Gang of Four and Magento Enterprise Edition

image

Google Analytics ecosystem – Pinpoint the effectiveness of Search Engine Optimization, Pay Per Click and other marketing efforts.

Highly experienced online merchants understand the importance of data and analytics, and almost all use Google Analytics to some degree. While we look at some of the same overall numbers like traffic, bounce rates, landing pages, and conversion rates, the slicing and dicing of those numbers is a different matter for just about every merchant we talk to.

While each merchant’s business strategy will drive them to look at different slices of data, almost every merchant would love to have more data, or have it presented in a more-accessible, actionable way.

In this article, we’re going to discuss how to make sure you have a solid foundation upon which to build additional layers of insight using Google Analytics as a base. As you read through the article, you can learn how to do everything we talk about by visiting the resources we provide throughout this article.

What is the Gang of Four?

First off, when we talk about Google Analytics, you are best served when the various Google properties work as a team.

Tying these services together is rarely the purview of a developer, designer or merchandiser. This is one of those areas that merchants or online merchandisers should embrace as part of their craft. While your systems integrator, developer or IT specialist may need to help you with the technical aspects, the vision should come from those responsible for marketing, merchandising and driving sales.

The main properties are:

Note: While we are talking about Google, which dominates the search market, Bing and other major search engines also offer webmaster tools and other service to help you tune your offerings.

Magento Enterprise Edition Makes It Easy

Fortunately for Magento Enterprise Edition merchants your software makes the part that involves adding code to your site extremely simple.

Adding Google Analytics is as simple as opening a free Google Analytics account and copying and pasting that account number into your Magento Enterprise Edition configuration panel.

Finding the Adwords code is a little trickier, but, Magento Enterprise Edition also has a copy and paste solution for that. This article refers to Magento Go, but the steps are the same in Magento Enterprise Edition.

Outside of Magento, if you really want to add more granularity to your Adwords tracking, you should connect your Google Adwords and Google Analytics accounts. Google provides easy-to-follow instructions for this, as well.

You will connect your store to Google Webmaster Tools via your Google Analytics account. This is done by clicking verify when adding an account in Webmaster Tools. From a Magento perspective, you want to be sure to submit your site map so that Google will catalog your store’s pages correctly.

Finally, if you aren’t using Product Listing Ads (PLAs) from Google, you should consider it. This will help ensure that your products show up in Google Shopping search results. The research on the subject we have seen to date shows a strong return on investment for most merchants who use them and manage them wisely. For more information on PLAs, take a look at an article we recently wrote on the subject.

If you aren’t familiar with PLAs, you should read this article about their advantages. If you sell in Europe, Jacques Van Der Walt’s article on the subject is really a must read.

In order to have your products show up in PLAs, you need to open a Merchant Center account, tie it to your Adwords account, and feed the products from your store directly to it.

While there is no core function to feed your products from Magento Enterprise Edition to your Merchant Center account, you might consider a couple of potential solutions:

1. Via an extension: Wyomind sells an extension that helps you map your products to Google and creates the feed for you.

2. Use an external service like DataFeedWatch. Their service allows you to set up a feed quickly and gives you powerful mapping tools that allow you to make exceptions for products based on any attribute in your store and/or content within those attributes.

In short, working with Google Analytics and the Google ecosystem is an absolute necessity for most merchants, but, many have delegated its management to their ‘techies.’ We urge marketers, merchandisers and entrepreneurs to take a more active approach in managing and analyzing the data in order to maximize the analytical power of your Magento store.

Signifyd Boosts Client’s Business With a Cloud-Based Fraud Prevention Solution

image

Every eCommerce business deals with fraud and chargebacks, and, for many businesses, managing fraud is still a very manual process that is not only frustrating, but cuts into the bottom line. To solve these issues for their client, GSM Nation, Magento Silver Solution Partner Signifyd used a cloud-based solution to automate the fraud prevention process. Here are the top results.

image

1. 80% Decrease in Manual Order Review: Signifyd’s solution saved GSM Nation hours of manual researching on Google, Facebook, and other sites. It scoured the web and combined public records, the social graph, device fingerprints, IP geolocation, proxies, issuing banks (BIN), cross merchant blacklists, search engines, maps and more. Signifyd then provided a single score that indicated the riskiness of a transaction, and all of the raw data to help with any remaining manual reviews. Click image to enlarge.

2. 20% Reduction in Fraud and 10% Increased Revenue:
GSM Nation was declining good transactions, such as orders from international customers and orders with different bill-to and ship-to addresses, because they were afraid those orders might be fraud. Signifyd’s solution validated these transactions almost instantly, which, in turn, increased revenue substantially. Signifyd also offers a Guaranteed Payments program to cover chargebacks.

3. Reduced Chargebacks to less than 1%: Signifyd detected when a fraudster bought something and notified GSM Nation immediately, using the same enterprise-grade technology in use by top Fortune 1,000 merchants.

Signifyd’s solution can also be integrated in minutes, not hours or days, with no upfront fees. This is a great option for businesses that don’t have technical support or developer resources because these solutions integrate with online stores in minutes. GSM Nation easily installed Signifyd through its extension in Magento Connect, at no charge.

For more on how Signifyd boosted GSM Nation’s business with their fraud prevention solution, join their webinar, “How to Reduce Manual Reviews and Reduce Fraud Using Signifyd with Magento,” on October 1, 2013, at 11:00 am (PDT). Register

Signifyd, one of the most widely adopted fraud prevention platforms, is also a Magento Silver Industry Partner. The first 100 customers who sign-up now for a two week free trial using Signifyd on the Magento Enterprise or Community Edition, will get up to 100 transactions per month free through January 1, 2014.

4 Reasons to Automate Your Drop Ship Process with a Cloud-based EDI Solution

Third-party drop shipping is increasingly popular in supply-chain management because it offers merchants an “endless aisle” without adding the extra costs associated with holding inventory. However, for many businesses, drop shipping is still a very manual process, which leads to inefficiencies, errors and less-optimal sales. Automating the drop ship process with a cloud-based electronic data interchange (EDI) provider solves all of these issues and more.

    Click the image to expand.

    image

    1. Offer an endless aisle of virtual inventory

Expand your product offering without the headaches of owning your own inventory. Instantly connect your Magento store to hundreds of suppliers who will ship directly to your customer with your branding.

    2. Manual data entry is eliminated

Since you are integrated with your trading partners, all EDI documents that are received are translated and deposited directly into your internal systems (QuickBooks, Dynamics GP, M.O.M., etc.).

    3. Inventory updates faster

With an EDI solution, you can send a digital 846 document which replaces the paper inventory update. Because digital EDI documents send quickly, you have the ability to work in real-time, ensuring that inventory is always up-to-date and reducing backordering.

    4. The order-to-cash cycle is shortened

Automation with an EDI provider consolidates much of the remaining data entry to one point, shortening the order-to-cash cycle.

Are you using Magento Enterprise Edition? Magento partner logicbroker is offering a free demo of their automated drop ship EDI, complementary ROI analysis, and 30 days of free service in an exclusive deal just for Magento merchants. Click here to find out more.

Responsive Design: Quick Guide for Email Templates and Websites

Studies show that more than half of emails were opened on a mobile device in the first half of 2013 and eMarketer predicts that eCommerce sales from tablets and mobile devices will reach almost 25% by 2017. However, seven out of ten recipients will delete an email if it doesn’t look good or work well on their tablet or smartphone, and the same goes for websites. Clearly, it’s time to consider responsive design for email marketing and eCommerce websites. The following is a quick guide for making the most important elements of your emails and website responsive.

    Click the image to expand.

    Email:

    image

Content as a Grid – Layouts change depending on screen size, so think about how content can be rearranged into a grid of moveable parts that will make sense in any layout.

Font Size – Make sure text in an image doesn’t scale down so much that it’s impossible to read, and always choose fonts that are clear and easy to read.

Subject Lines and Pre-header Text – Email inboxes on smartphones show sender or company name, subject line and pre-header text. Subject lines, while important, get cut off if they’re too long, so use the pre-header text to really engage and entice the recipient.

Navigation – Website navigation or menu links in emails typically don’t get a lot of clicks, so move them to the bottom of the message and stack neatly in easy-to-click buttons.

Design for Thumbs – It’s been reported that nearly one-third of all mobile click-throughs are made by accident, so think both about how mobile emails look, and how recipients will interact with them. Design to avoid accidental clicks, but also be sure buttons, links and other tap targets are large enough for fingers and thumbs to deliberately click on, and that there is enough padding around tap targets so users click on the correct link.

    Website:

Mobile in Mind – Starting designs with a ‘mobile first’ mindset is recommended when you have more mobile than desktop traffic. Design for the majority first, while supplying viable options for the smaller percentage of users.

Context – A common misconception is that you have a mobile user’s attention for only a fleeting moment. The truth is that people use mobile and tablet devices in a variety of contexts, so it’s important to deliver consistent content across all mediums.

Mobile Touch Points – Studies show thumb usage on phones and tablets and the range where the most action happens. Don’t put important action items in a dead zone like the top center of a tablet, and leave a 40x45px area around all buttons and links to prevent accidental clicking.

Load Times – Assume that many users will be looking at sites on 56k modems (desktop/tablet) or slow 3G mobile networks (smartphones). It’s a collaborative effort between developers and designers to reduce complexity and weight on mobile devices, but trimming down javascript and following best practices for front-end development will help load times.

Feature Detection – While you should design and build your site to be device agnostic, you can still take advantage of the unique abilities mobile and tablet devices have over desktop counterparts—such as location-based GPS, accelerometer and multi-touch—to enhance the user’s shopping experience.
