Customer segmentation is the art of grouping customers together based on certain shared characteristics or behaviors. At it’s most basic, customer segmentation can help you increase profits by targeting customers with personalized promotions and special offers. More advanced customer segmentation strategies can help you make the best use of your marketing resources, identify promising new markets, and increase overall customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.
Successful customer segmentation starts with collecting and analyzing customer data. But there’s more to customer segmentation than grouping customers demographically. Our latest eBook, Identifying Your Most Profitable Customers: An Introduction to Customer Segmentation outlines the steps and strategies to:

Third-party drop shipping is increasingly popular in supply-chain management because it offers merchants an “endless aisle” without adding the extra costs associated with holding inventory. However, for many businesses, drop shipping is still a very manual process, which leads to inefficiencies, errors and less-optimal sales. Automating the drop ship process with a cloud-based electronic data interchange (EDI) provider solves all of these issues and more.
Click the image to expand.
1. Offer an endless aisle of virtual inventory
Expand your product offering without the headaches of owning your own inventory. Instantly connect your Magento store to hundreds of suppliers who will ship directly to your customer with your branding.
2. Manual data entry is eliminated
Since you are integrated with your trading partners, all EDI documents that are received are translated and deposited directly into your internal systems (QuickBooks, Dynamics GP, M.O.M., etc.).
3. Inventory updates faster
With an EDI solution, you can send a digital 846 document which replaces the paper inventory update. Because digital EDI documents send quickly, you have the ability to work in real-time, ensuring that inventory is always up-to-date and reducing backordering.
4. The order-to-cash cycle is shortened
Automation with an EDI provider consolidates much of the remaining data entry to one point, shortening the order-to-cash cycle.
Are you using Magento Enterprise Edition? Magento partner logicbroker is offering a free demo of their automated drop ship EDI, complementary ROI analysis, and 30 days of free service in an exclusive deal just for Magento merchants. Click here to find out more.
Studies show that more than half of emails were opened on a mobile device in the first half of 2013 and eMarketer predicts that eCommerce sales from tablets and mobile devices will reach almost 25% by 2017. However, seven out of ten recipients will delete an email if it doesn’t look good or work well on their tablet or smartphone, and the same goes for websites. Clearly, it’s time to consider responsive design for email marketing and eCommerce websites. The following is a quick guide for making the most important elements of your emails and website responsive.
Click the image to expand.
Content as a Grid – Layouts change depending on screen size, so think about how content can be rearranged into a grid of moveable parts that will make sense in any layout.
Font Size – Make sure text in an image doesn’t scale down so much that it’s impossible to read, and always choose fonts that are clear and easy to read.
Subject Lines and Pre-header Text – Email inboxes on smartphones show sender or company name, subject line and pre-header text. Subject lines, while important, get cut off if they’re too long, so use the pre-header text to really engage and entice the recipient.
Navigation – Website navigation or menu links in emails typically don’t get a lot of clicks, so move them to the bottom of the message and stack neatly in easy-to-click buttons.
Design for Thumbs – It’s been reported that nearly one-third of all mobile click-throughs are made by accident, so think both about how mobile emails look, and how recipients will interact with them. Design to avoid accidental clicks, but also be sure buttons, links and other tap targets are large enough for fingers and thumbs to deliberately click on, and that there is enough padding around tap targets so users click on the correct link.
Mobile in Mind – Starting designs with a ‘mobile first’ mindset is recommended when you have more mobile than desktop traffic. Design for the majority first, while supplying viable options for the smaller percentage of users.
Context – A common misconception is that you have a mobile user’s attention for only a fleeting moment. The truth is that people use mobile and tablet devices in a variety of contexts, so it’s important to deliver consistent content across all mediums.
Mobile Touch Points – Studies show thumb usage on phones and tablets and the range where the most action happens. Don’t put important action items in a dead zone like the top center of a tablet, and leave a 40x45px area around all buttons and links to prevent accidental clicking.
Feature Detection – While you should design and build your site to be device agnostic, you can still take advantage of the unique abilities mobile and tablet devices have over desktop counterparts—such as location-based GPS, accelerometer and multi-touch—to enhance the user’s shopping experience.

MAGIC is the fashion industry’s premier trade event. With tens of thousands of attendees from over eighty countries, it is the ultimate platform for conducting the business of fashion. On Monday, August 19, Magento lead two educational seminars during the conference and both sessions were jam-packed, without an open seat in the room!
The content for each presentation centered around how to ‘Transform Your Online Store Into a Multi-Million Dollar Business’ and touched on four key strategies you can use to get started today.
Each key point was highlighted with a company in the fashion industry that is getting it right. From Smythson and Rebecca Minkoff to Harper’s BAZAAR and Stella & Dot, Magento is lucky to have savvy customers who are leading the way for other retailers around the world.
After Ben Pressley (Head of Worldwide Sales for Magento) presented these four key points, he interviewed the CIO of Stella & Dot, Eduardo Frias, about how they are using Magento to challenge the boundaries of a conventional site. Magento helped Stella & Dot build a site that not only catered to their 14,000 stylists, but also supported their direct-to-consumer channel, and Mr. Frias’ shared key insights he learned along the way.

Magento Enterprise Edition’s growing popularity as an eCommerce solution stems, in part, from its robust set of features and tools, making it an ideal platform for businesses of all sizes. Out of the box, its powerful, flexible options allow developers and businesses to seamlessly fulfill a wide range of eCommerce essentials, positioning these sites for growth and scalability.
However, with some creative customizations, your Magento Enterprise Edition store can be further optimized by updating these seven, “forgotten” pages.

Occasionally, customers find their way into a shopping cart that doesn’t have any products in it. This Empty Shopping Cart page is a great place to include a call to action or an incentive that would keep customers on your site and drive them to purchase. As a bonus, this will also contribute to brand building.
An example of a call to action is to cross-sell and upsell, or to show them items from their wish list that are on sale. To incentivize customers to purchase, try a coupon discount towards their purchase.

Since you only have about five seconds to engage visitors, you need to make sure that every aspect of your site takes them to what they’re looking for—and quickly. By now, most businesses appreciate that search is one of the very first tools customers use (and how important it is that search returns relevant results within seconds). What they may not be thinking about is a search tool’s role in catalog and traffic growth.
In their recent webinar, Thinking Beyond Search With Solr: Understanding How Solr Can Help Your Business Scale, the Magento Expert Consulting Group (ECG) presented a high level overview of why merchants should consider using Magento Enterprise Editions’s out-of-box integration with Solr as their search engine. The key takeaway is that Solr’s adaptable data structure goes beyond search to support catalog and traffic growth—without losing its lightning-fast response times. Can your search tool do that?

Preparing for the 2013 Holiday Season – August 14
If you’re like the majority of site owners, then you’re probably not satisfied with your eCommerce store’s conversion rate. According to eConsultancy, only 22% of companies are satisfied, and that number has been trending downward for the past four years.
To make matters worse, companies say that conversion rates are getting harder to improve. The percentage of website owners who were unable to increase conversion rates has risen by 17% since 2010.
All the while, the importance of conversion optimization has been steadily increasing, and it’s now prioritized above social media marketing and brand building, and tied with content marketing, as seen in a recent Digital Trends Report from eConsultancy.
There is something wrong with this picture. Why are companies struggling to make improvements to this vital part of their marketing plan?
Marketer gut feelings and so-called “best practices” are to blame
Does your website have a carousel or “slider” on the homepage? Do you prominently feature your site security badge? Scientific testing by WiderFunnel has shown that both of these “best practices” can actually hurt your conversions. While they may seem like an obvious solution to the problem of how to feature several important offers, homepage carousels have proven to hurt conversions rates in many cases. The prominent site security badge can be a problem when it focuses your customers on security, rather than completing their purchase. So why do so many businesses emphasize them? Best practices and gut feelings.
You should base your strategy on scientific marketing instead. According to eConsultancy, when companies use a structured approach to conversion rate optimization, they are twice as likely to see increases in sales.
This should come as no surprise. The scientific method is the source of a lot of the world’s knowledge. Advances in healthcare, education and technology did not come about by using gut intuition or best practices. Why would your website be any different?
But instead of embracing the scientific method when it comes to conversion optimization, 63% of companies are still relying on the habits they’re used to, or the so-called “common sense” of their peers. This is your chance to break out and get ahead of the competition. Continue Reading Article…
