Magento’s Fashion Merchants Shine at MAGIC

MAGIC is the fashion industry’s premier trade event. With tens of thousands of attendees from over eighty countries, it is the ultimate platform for conducting the business of fashion. On Monday, August 19, Magento lead two educational seminars during the conference and both sessions were jam-packed, without an open seat in the room!

The content for each presentation centered around how to ‘Transform Your Online Store Into a Multi-Million Dollar Business’ and touched on four key strategies you can use to get started today.

In order to take your business to the next level, it is important to:

  1. Focus on Consistency
  2. Stay True to Your Brand DNA
  3. Create Seamless Customer Experiences
  4. Challenge the Boundaries

Each key point was highlighted with a company in the fashion industry that is getting it right. From Smythson and Rebecca Minkoff to Harper’s BAZAAR and Stella & Dot, Magento is lucky to have savvy customers who are leading the way for other retailers around the world.

After Ben Pressley (Head of Worldwide Sales for Magento) presented these four key points, he interviewed the CIO of Stella & Dot, Eduardo Frias, about how they are using Magento to challenge the boundaries of a conventional site. Magento helped Stella & Dot build a site that not only catered to their 14,000 stylists, but also supported their direct-to-consumer channel, and Mr. Frias’ shared key insights he learned along the way.

The Seven Forgotten Pages of Magento and How to Optimize Them

    image

Magento Enterprise Edition’s growing popularity as an eCommerce solution stems, in part, from its robust set of features and tools, making it an ideal platform for businesses of all sizes. Out of the box, its powerful, flexible options allow developers and businesses to seamlessly fulfill a wide range of eCommerce essentials, positioning these sites for growth and scalability.

However, with some creative customizations, your Magento Enterprise Edition store can be further optimized by updating these seven, “forgotten” pages.

    POPULAR MAGENTO PAGES FOR SITESsize>
    (based on aggregated data)

    image

    Empty Shopping Cartsize>

Occasionally, customers find their way into a shopping cart that doesn’t have any products in it. This Empty Shopping Cart page is a great place to include a call to action or an incentive that would keep customers on your site and drive them to purchase. As a bonus, this will also contribute to brand building.

An example of a call to action is to cross-sell and upsell, or to show them items from their wish list that are on sale. To incentivize customers to purchase, try a coupon discount towards their purchase.

Magento ECG Webinar Recap: Thinking Beyond Search with Solr

    image

Since you only have about five seconds to engage visitors, you need to make sure that every aspect of your site takes them to what they’re looking for—and quickly. By now, most businesses appreciate that search is one of the very first tools customers use (and how important it is that search returns relevant results within seconds). What they may not be thinking about is a search tool’s role in catalog and traffic growth.

In their recent webinar, Thinking Beyond Search With Solr: Understanding How Solr Can Help Your Business Scale, the Magento Expert Consulting Group (ECG) presented a high level overview of why merchants should consider using Magento Enterprise Editions’s out-of-box integration with Solr as their search engine. The key takeaway is that Solr’s adaptable data structure goes beyond search to support catalog and traffic growth—without losing its lightning-fast response times. Can your search tool do that?

To find out more, watch the free webinar now and check out the Q&A from the folks who attended.

For eCommerce Conversion Optimization, A Data-Driven Strategy Is Key

    image

If you’re like the majority of site owners, then you’re probably not satisfied with your eCommerce store’s conversion rate. According to eConsultancy, only 22% of companies are satisfied, and that number has been trending downward for the past four years.

To make matters worse, companies say that conversion rates are getting harder to improve. The percentage of website owners who were unable to increase conversion rates has risen by 17% since 2010.

All the while, the importance of conversion optimization has been steadily increasing, and it’s now prioritized above social media marketing and brand building, and tied with content marketing, as seen in a recent Digital Trends Report from eConsultancy.

There is something wrong with this picture. Why are companies struggling to make improvements to this vital part of their marketing plan?

Marketer gut feelings and so-called “best practices” are to blame

Does your website have a carousel or “slider” on the homepage? Do you prominently feature your site security badge? Scientific testing by WiderFunnel has shown that both of these “best practices” can actually hurt your conversions. While they may seem like an obvious solution to the problem of how to feature several important offers, homepage carousels have proven to hurt conversions rates in many cases. The prominent site security badge can be a problem when it focuses your customers on security, rather than completing their purchase. So why do so many businesses emphasize them? Best practices and gut feelings.

You should base your strategy on scientific marketing instead. According to eConsultancy, when companies use a structured approach to conversion rate optimization, they are twice as likely to see increases in sales.

This should come as no surprise. The scientific method is the source of a lot of the world’s knowledge. Advances in healthcare, education and technology did not come about by using gut intuition or best practices. Why would your website be any different?

But instead of embracing the scientific method when it comes to conversion optimization, 63% of companies are still relying on the habits they’re used to, or the so-called “common sense” of their peers. This is your chance to break out and get ahead of the competition. Continue Reading Article…

Magento Community Edition Alert: Important Patch for USPS API

Patch Needed to Address USPS Shipping Option Name Changes

On Sunday, July 28, the United States Postal Service rolled out changes to their API that impact Priority and Express mail shipping options. USPS is changing the name of these two shipping methods and their Webtools API was updated to match those changes.

To continue utilizing USPS Priority AND Express mail methods, merchants on Magento solutions must install the patches we’ve created to address the issue, and we have included patches for all versions of Magento Community Edition and installation instructions in this post.

For more information, download the official statement from USPS.

Click here for Magento Enterprise Edition patches.

    Patch Installation Instructions

Please upload the patch into your Magento root directory and run the appropriate SSH command:

For patch files with the file extension .sh:

    sh patch_file_name.sh

    Example: sh PATCH_SUPEE-1868_CE_1.7.0.2_v1.sh

For patch files with the file extension .patch:

    patch –p0

Once that is done, refresh the cache in the Admin under “System > Cache Management” so that the changes will be reflected. We highly recommend you test this patch in a test environment before taking it live.

    Patches for Magento Community Edition

Versions before 1.7 require applying an upgrade of shipping methods patch first (if you have not already installed it). Please use the table below to find and download the correct patches for your version.

New Magento eBook: The Rules (and Tools) for Successful Customer Engagement

Learn tips and strategies you can use to drive repeat sales and brand loyalty

Not long ago, customer engagement meant attracting customers with great deals and then moving them as quickly as possible to checkout. These days, customer engagement means using social media, personalized shopping experiences, and targeted interactions to build lasting customer relationships.

image The idea is that, when merchants are able to engage customers on a personal level, those customers are more likely to buy. Highly engaged customers tend to be more loyal, and will recommend brands and products they like to their friends and family.

Brand Strategy in an Omni-Channel World

      image

Right now, “omni-channel strategy” is something of a buzz-word in eCommerce circles. Whether they’re discussing traditional brick-and-mortar businesses expanding their reach online, popular eStores opening a physical location, or evaluating the endless list of shopping portals and social media outlets, most of the conversation has centered on the channels themselves.

I find this sort of exchange quite interesting, but I’m typically the guy in the back of the room that not-so-politely clears his throat and says, “Um, how exactly will this affect your brand?”

Brand development is typically not at the top of a busy executive’s list of to-do’s, but I like to remind them that their brand is all they’ve got. If your brand loses its potency, you’re doomed to engage in price wars with other companies that may even be favored to win.

While it’s comforting to talk at length about omni-channel strategy, it’s important to remember that your customers don’t care about any of that. 99% of them have never used the term omni-channel in their life, and channel distinctions are fairly meaningless to them. No matter where a customer encounters a brand, they tend to see it all as a seamless whole from which they base their feelings. Your customers only care about their needs, certainly not yours, and you have to be enormously empathetic to them.

Wait a second here. Feelings? Empathy? Yeah, I know, this is getting kind of weird and uncomfortable, so let me bring it back down to the bottom-line: Buying is emotional. The less feeling a customer has towards your brand, the less they buy from you.

Now that should make you feel uncomfortable. In order to avoid that outcome, we need to get a little weird. We need to get out of our rigid routines and really evaluate why we’re doing what we’re doing. If meeting your customer’s needs isn’t your core inspiration, it’s time to recalibrate. After all, you don’t ultimately determine the success of your brand—your customer does. Continue Reading Article
