Keith Packard has been the release manager for the X Server 1.6 series and back in early May he issued an X Server 1.6.2 release cadndidate to close a few more X.Org bugs in this critical piece of software. After pulling in another heaping of bug fixes, Keith has now announced X Server 1.6.2 Release [...] X.Org 7.5 with the X Server 1.7 update has been delayed, again. X.Org 7.5 was originally scheduled for release in early April but that ended up being an April Fool’s Day joke. In late April the X.Org 7.5 / X Server 1.7 release schedule was then revised for a July release. The feature freeze for [...] Look at what I have running in Xfce 4.4 on my OpenBSD 4.4 laptop. Do you think I should stop some of these Xfce services that I have in my panels? There are maybe seven or eight in there that use about 10 MB of RAM each. On this 768 MB system, should I be [...] X.Org 7.5 with the X Server 1.7 release was planned for release at the start of this month, but sadly they far from made it — no test releases of the new X Server are even available yet. Though after reading Phoronix, Daniel Stone remembered this release schedule and has decided to give another try [...] Just over a week ago Intel had come out with the xf86-video-intel 2.6.2 driver, but today that is already being replaced with xf86-video-intel 2.6.3. The 2.6.2 release was significant in that it presented some major fixes to the Graphics Execution Manager and kernel mode-setting… Read more at Phoronix Arriving almost two months later than originally expected, X Server 1.6 has finally been officially released. Version 1.6 was scheduled for the beginning of this year, but missed its January 5th release date. The new release includes support for Direct Rendering Infrastructure 2, X Input 1.5 (including device properties), Predictable Pointer Acceleration and RandR 1.3. [...] The development community behind the open source Compiz window manager is undergoing a major reorganization effort that will converge disparate branches of the project and help it overcome its recent lack of direction. Compiz is responsible for bringing rich visual effects such as cube rotation, transparency, shadows, and wobbly windows to the Linux desktop. It [...] In late 2008 we witnessed the release of Compiz++, a rewrite of the Compiz core in C++ plus other invasive work in order to improve this compositing window manager. With Compiz++ being a branch of Compiz and various other developers working on their own branches, the future of Compiz was unclear, however, today it has [...] The outlook turned grim for meeting the X Server 1.6 release schedule when no release candidate was out by Christmas (and we still have yet to see any tagged RC) and then when the final release date passed with no X Server 1.6 in sight. Nothing had been committed to the X Server 1.6 repository [...] Just in time for the holidays is a new Nouveau Companion newsletter to update the community on the status of this open-source 2D/3D NVIDIA driver that is written by clean room reverse-engineering of NVIDIA’s binary driver. It has been a while since Nouveau Companion 40, but there is still active work going into this X.Org [...] Back in September when the X developers raided the Edinburgh Zoo for the 2008 X Developers’ Summit, Intel’s Keith Packard made the rather dramatic announcement that he intended to ship X Server 1.6 and he would step up as the release manager. This announcement was significant in that it had taken a year to go [...] Stephane Marchesin, the leader of the Nouveau project, has announced that the Mesa work has been merged into the Gallium3D version 0.2 branch instead of being developed in an independent branch. Nouveau is the community project that’s been reverse-engineering NVIDIA’s binary Linux driver in order to provide an open-source 2D and 3D driver for NVIDIA [...] X Server 1.5 / X.Org 7.4 was released at the end of September. X Server 1.5.1 was quickly released around the same time and X Server 1.5.2 was released in early October. A month later we now have another bug-fix release for X Server 1.5. Read more at Phoronix It’s been almost six months since the last issue of the Nouveau Companion, but Pekka Paalanen has rejuvenated these efforts and has put out the 40th issue of this newsletter that updates the open-source community on the status of the Nouveau project, an effort to reverse-engineer NVIDIA’s binary driver and provide a fully open-source 2D [...] X Server 1.5.1 was only released two and a half weeks ago as a quick bug-fix release to X Server 1.5.0, which is the server component for X.Org 7.4, but today we have a third release. Adam Jackson has announced the release of X Server 1.5.2 with 14 changes. Read more at Phoronix It’s been a hell of a time getting X.Org 7.4 out the door, but this afternoon Adam Jackson has released this long-delayed update to this X system. X.Org 7.4 is arriving after the release of X Server 1.5.1 earlier in the day. Yes, it’s finally here! In this article we have information on the features [...] Back in May we had the release of Compiz 0.7.6 with rewritten plug-ins and other changes to boost the vitality of this popular compositing manager. Since then all activity on the Compiz front has been relatively quiet, until this morning… Read more at Phoronix The final release of the Xfce 4.6 desktop environment was supposed to come this month, but instead the first alpha release has finally come about. Xfce 4.4 was originally released in January of 2007, so it has been quite a while since this lightweight desktop environment has received a major update. This release though does [...] It has been one year and four days since X.Org 7.3 was released and a number of months since X.Org 7.4 was supposed to be released, but today X.Org 7.4 is scheduled to finally make it out the door! This release is shipping quite late and with a slimmed down set of features, but in [...] Mesa 7.1 was released near the end of August and X Server 1.5.0 was released just earlier this week, but the release of X.Org 7.4 consisting of all the latest X packages has yet to make it out the door. While the developers attending the X Developers’ Summit had taken the afternoon off to entertain [...] |
