In-Depth Roadmap Analysis For Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04

Posted on November 1st, 2007 in Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu by freesoftnews
Edubuntu Kubuntu Ubuntu Xubuntu

The Hardy Heron Roadmap has over 130 new ideas that have been proposed thus far.  I’ve examined each one of these ideas in detail, threw out the ones that weren’t interesting to me, wrote an explanation for each, and sorted the list into three categories:

  1. User Experience,
  2. Networking and Security,
  3. Support

Of course, the juiciest items have already made headlines, such as the new theme that is being planned… “I for one, welcome our new hopefully non-brown themed overlords!”

What about the proposed changes that don’t deserve their own headline?  Either you have to muck through that entire list, or you can simply read about it here.  You can get more information about specific items by clicking on the name of the proposal, which will take you to a page that has a little bit more information about it.  Without more from me, here we go.

Some New FUD Is Born - And a New Wallpaper for Edubuntu

Posted on September 22nd, 2007 in Edubuntu, News by freesoftnews
Edubuntu News

I can usually tell what the new Microsoft anti-Linux FUD is by reading what Rob Enderle writes. Not that I seek it out. People send it to me. He’s as reliable as Old Faithful at spilling the strategies, just as he channeled SCOthink before. I found it very helpful, by the way. Thanks for being so transparent. One of the purposes of Groklaw is to do antiFUD work, to meet FUD with facts, so people are not misled. And after reading his latest, about the EU ruling, I think I’ve figured out what the new FUD is:

In addition, the ruling may create a stronger Microsoft code-based competitor for Linux at a time when the Linux supporters seem to be increasingly at odds with each other and appear to be vulnerable to a true competitive attack.

Increasingly at odds with one another? I’d say quite the contrary, myself, thanks to SCO. No, what I believe I’m seeing is what appear to be manufactured incidents or at least incidents blown way out of proportion making it appear that the Linux community is at odds with itself. Is it deliberate? Or just free-floating anti-Linux hostility? Time will tell.

Ubuntu Technical Board votes on Compiz for Ubuntu 7.10

Posted on September 14th, 2007 in Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu by freesoftnews
Edubuntu Kubuntu Ubuntu Xubuntu

The Ubuntu Technical Board voted yesterday to ship Ubuntu 7.10 (”Gutsy”) with Compiz enabled by default. Although Compiz has been featured in Ubuntu 7.10 Tribe prerelesases, the board has had difficulty determining whether or not it is reliable and functionally complete enough to warrant inclusion in the final release.

Compiz is a compositing window manager that includes a number of highly sophisticated visual effects like window shadows, transparency, and desktop zooming. In the Tribe prereleases, basic visual effects are enabled by default on supported hardware, and more sophisticated visual effects—like wobbling windows—can be enabled with a configuration utility. A compositing window manager was originally planned for inclusion in Ubuntu 7.04, but it was delayed because the software wasn’t considered mature enough.

Controlling and managing Edubuntu users’ desktops

Posted on August 7th, 2007 in Edubuntu, Howtos by freesoftnews
Edubuntu Howtos

The community-driven Edubuntu project aims to create a version of Ubuntu specially tailored for use in primary and secondary education. Perhaps the most useful feature present in the Edubuntu OS is the Linux Terminal Server Project environment, whose applications are not limited just to eduction. The LTSP model centers around one powerful machine that acts as a server and several often much lower-powered machines that act as clients and boot from an installation of Ubuntu on the server. Though you will not be installing anything on them, there are still some maintenance tasks specifically directed at clients.

Edubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 2

Posted on July 3rd, 2007 in Edubuntu by freesoftnews
Edubuntu

Out of all of the Ubuntu derivative distributions, the one that’s received the least amount of attention really has been Edubuntu. With a slogan of “Linux for Young Human Beings”, Edubuntu is a Linux distribution designed for students and use in school environments. It includes several applications for students and the younger ones that cater towards education and is not included in Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Xubuntu. Coinciding with last week’s release of Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 2 was also the second alpha build for Edubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, which is featured today at Phoronix.

Tip of the Trade: Edubuntu

Edubuntu News

“When you need to set up a computer lab, classroom or meeting room in a hurry, look no further than Edubuntu, ‘Linux for Young Human Beings.’ Edubuntu is targeted at the classroom, but it’s a dandy Linux terminal server for all occasions. You can literally have an entire network up and and running in an hour.

“Edubuntu, like all good Linuxes, supports older hardware well. So you can collect a motley assemblage of leftover and castoff PCs, put them to useful work, and spend almost no money…”

Ubuntu, Kubuntu, & Xubuntu Benchmarks

Edubuntu Kubuntu Ubuntu Xubuntu

With Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu each deploying a different desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, and Xfce respectively), how do each of these distributions compare performance-wise? We have taken two systems — one with dual Intel Clovertown processors and the other an AMD Sempron — and tested out each of these distributions in some of our commonly used Linux benchmarks to see how the performance truly stacks up. In this article we will be presenting part one of our results.

Feisty Fawn Herd 2 released

Posted on January 15th, 2007 in Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu by freesoftnews
Edubuntu Kubuntu Ubuntu Xubuntu

Welcome to Feisty Fawn Herd 2, which will in time become Ubuntu 7.04.

Pre-releases of Feisty are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a
stable system, or anyone who is not comfortable running into
occasional, even frequent breakage. They are however recommended for
Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting,
and fixing bugs. Installing a milestone and then upgrading through
the release cycle should leave you with a close approximation of the
final release.

Herd 2 is the second in a series of milestone CD images that will be
released throughout the Feisty development cycle. The Herd images are
known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs,
while representing current snapshots of Feisty. You can download it
here, for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu respectively:
