Hardy KDE 4.1 Beta 1 Completed

KDE Kubuntu Ubuntu

YES! It took me long enough with all of the work that was going on at the same time, but I would like to present you the ability to test out KDE 4.1 Beta 1 in Kubuntu Hardy right now! It seems we have worked out a majority of the quirks, but I can’t promise you that you may not get an overwrite issue with dpkg just yet. I do think we got them all covered, but you may have something nobody else does, so we didn’t catch it. We have been testing these packages since Saturday/Sunday and I have updated them as people reported issues.

Australian School Reuses Old PCs with KDE

Posted on April 13th, 2008 in Hardware, KDE, Kubuntu, News by freesoftnews
Hardware KDE Kubuntu News

A secondary school in Melbourne, Australia, is using KDE on Kubuntu, with KDE’s own Kiosk tool to lock down its library workstations. Implementing a kiosk mode Kubuntu setup allowed Westall Secondary School to save money, exact greater control over security measures, and extend the life of older and previously abandoned hardware without sacrificing performance. The school’s IT support manager said the Kiosk admin tool was chosen as there was not enough flexibility with other desktops to allow “decent” lockdown.

Mission “Kubuntu Migration” Accomplished

Posted on February 27th, 2008 in Kubuntu by freesoftnews
Kubuntu

After I had first Kubuntu impressions using a VMware image I finally did it. My SuSE 10.2 partition was wipped out and Kubuntu 7.10 “Gutsy Gibbon” has been installed. This happened several weeks ago. In the meatime I found several pleasant surprises while enjoying a Kubuntu installation for my daily work. However where light is there are also shadows. This article supplements my initial review. I will use the same categories, where I feel there are updates worth mentioning as well as some new ones. Please consider this article as a delta to my first impressions. To get a full understanding of this review, please read my first Kubuntu impressions first.

Kubuntu LTS

Posted on December 23rd, 2007 in Kubuntu by freesoftnews
Kubuntu

The release schedule for KDE 4 is now clear, and it will be released
during the development cycle of Kubuntu 8.04. This new major release
is already attracting significant interest from users, and is the
focus of most KDE developer effort at this point. The majority of
enquiries are now about KDE 4, and an unsupported Live CD of the 7.10
platform with KDE 4 RC2 we released earlier this month was downloaded
by a significant number of developers.

We regularly review each release during the development cycle, keeping
an eye on the work that our upstreams are doing. From time to time,
this work reaches a natural rest point resulting in a particularly
stable release. For these releases, Canonical makes a commercial
commitment to provide support for a longer term and these become known
as “LTS” releases.

KDE 4.0 Release Candidate 2 was made available yesterday as the last testing release before the final KDE 4.0 build next month. If you’ve been wanting to try out this latest version of KDE 4.0, but aren’t yet ready to fully upgrade, there are Linux LiveCDs already available that integrate KDE 4.0 RC2. Two of these LiveCDs are the OpenSuSE-based KDE Four Live 0.8 and a KDE 4.0 spin of Kubuntu.

Two Weeks with Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10)

Posted on November 6th, 2007 in KDE, Kubuntu by freesoftnews
KDE Kubuntu

I do enjoy the Kubuntu development cycle. Just as I’m starting to feel that my stable, long-configured system is starting to get a little blase, the new version is just around the corner. I eagerly upgraded to Kubuntu Gutsy when it was released on my faithful Vaio TX. Gutsy has been released for a few weeks now, so consider these not my first impressions but my opinion formed over 2 solid weeks of using Kubuntu as my main operating system at work.

Kubuntu Gutsy is based on KDE 3.5.8, a bugfix release of the stable 3.5 series. It doesn’t boast much in the way of improved features from previous versions, focusing on improving performance, stability and resolving issues. Changes include performance improvements to the core libraries, and a wide range of bug and crash fixes. See the KDE 3.5.8 changelog for details.

In-Depth Roadmap Analysis For Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04

Posted on November 1st, 2007 in Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu by freesoftnews
Edubuntu Kubuntu Ubuntu Xubuntu

The Hardy Heron Roadmap has over 130 new ideas that have been proposed thus far.  I’ve examined each one of these ideas in detail, threw out the ones that weren’t interesting to me, wrote an explanation for each, and sorted the list into three categories:

  1. User Experience,
  2. Networking and Security,
  3. Support

Of course, the juiciest items have already made headlines, such as the new theme that is being planned… “I for one, welcome our new hopefully non-brown themed overlords!”

What about the proposed changes that don’t deserve their own headline?  Either you have to muck through that entire list, or you can simply read about it here.  You can get more information about specific items by clicking on the name of the proposal, which will take you to a page that has a little bit more information about it.  Without more from me, here we go.

Kubuntu Takes Over the Canary Islands

Posted on October 1st, 2007 in Kubuntu, Ubuntu by freesoftnews
Kubuntu Ubuntu

The Canary Islands have two derivatives of Kubuntu, one which is being installed in all their schools and one used by the largest university. The Jornadas de Software Libre conference at The University of La Laguna, took place in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, from the 18th-21st September 2007. It was organised by the university’s Software Libre Office (OSL).

In a trip to on the of the schools, mEDUXa 1.2 was shown to Jonathan Riddell (Kubuntu’s main developer) and Aaron Seigo (president of KDE e.V.). For more than an hour, members of the MEDUSA project from the Educational Department of the Canary Island Regional Government, along with some of the members of mEDUXa’s 1.2 team and conference organisers, all talked about the project. These well known community members were informed about the actual state of the project and future plans. They visited a computer lab where the workstations were all running Kubuntu based mEDUXa v1.2.

Ubuntu Technical Board votes on Compiz for Ubuntu 7.10

Posted on September 14th, 2007 in Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu by freesoftnews
Edubuntu Kubuntu Ubuntu Xubuntu

The Ubuntu Technical Board voted yesterday to ship Ubuntu 7.10 (”Gutsy”) with Compiz enabled by default. Although Compiz has been featured in Ubuntu 7.10 Tribe prerelesases, the board has had difficulty determining whether or not it is reliable and functionally complete enough to warrant inclusion in the final release.

Compiz is a compositing window manager that includes a number of highly sophisticated visual effects like window shadows, transparency, and desktop zooming. In the Tribe prereleases, basic visual effects are enabled by default on supported hardware, and more sophisticated visual effects—like wobbling windows—can be enabled with a configuration utility. A compositing window manager was originally planned for inclusion in Ubuntu 7.04, but it was delayed because the software wasn’t considered mature enough.

LinuxMCE Partners with KDE for New Release

Posted on August 16th, 2007 in KDE, Kubuntu by freesoftnews
KDE Kubuntu

When picking a media center solution for your PC, it tends to be a matter of compromise. There are solutions that are visually attractive, solutions that are Free/open source software, solutions that are more complete than others and solutions that integrate well with a desktop environment. In the past there have been few, if any, that have been all of these things. After an extensive beta testing period a new version of LinuxMCE, release 0704, was recently made available to the public that shows how we can indeed have our media center cake and eat it too. Read on for details of this release and future plans for KDE integration.

Hands on: Ubuntu Linux – Kubuntu and Xubuntu

Posted on July 30th, 2007 in Kubuntu, Xubuntu by freesoftnews
Kubuntu Xubuntu

In April the latest version of Ubuntu Linux, Feisty Fawn, was released. In this article, we are turning our attention to Kubuntu.

As regular readers will know, Ubuntu Linux has two official desktop variants – Kubuntu, which uses the KDE desktop, and Xubuntu, with the XFCE desktop.

While you can install KDE and XFCE in Ubuntu itself (and choose between desktops on login), installing Kubuntu from scratch is the best way to get a clean install without any of the Gnome desktop packages that form the main Ubuntu distribution.

Ubuntu, Kubuntu, & Xubuntu Benchmarks

Edubuntu Kubuntu Ubuntu Xubuntu

With Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu each deploying a different desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, and Xfce respectively), how do each of these distributions compare performance-wise? We have taken two systems — one with dual Intel Clovertown processors and the other an AMD Sempron — and tested out each of these distributions in some of our commonly used Linux benchmarks to see how the performance truly stacks up. In this article we will be presenting part one of our results.
