Wine 1.0 Review

Posted on June 20th, 2008 in Wine by freesoftnews
Wine

Finally, the so called ’stable’ version of Wine, 1.0, has been released on June 17, 2008.

The last Wine review I made was for 1.0RC2 (release candidate 2), in which I already tested World of WarCraft, mIRC and DC++. I had no issues with World of WarCraft (tested using a trial account) which performs very well, without any visible problems, DC++ has minor stability problems and the mIRC scripts editor crashes, but otherwise, mIRC behaves good enough.

Wine 1.0 Release Status

Posted on May 19th, 2008 in Wine by freesoftnews
Wine

wine-1.0rc1 was released on Friday, May 9th, 2008. Wine is now in a code freeze in preparation for the 1.0 release.

According to http://wiki.winehq.org/WineReleasePlan, wine-1.0.0-rc2 will be due out Friday, May 23rd, 2008. It will be something like be the next to last release candidate for 1.0.

Alexandre is on vacation, so git is a bit stale. In particular, Photoshop CS2 and DNS 9 don’t install properly due to a regression introduced just before his vacation started; here’s the fix.

Some effort has been put into making it easy for people to automatically report “make test” failures; see MakeTestFailures for info and results.

Following the WINE 0.9.61 release this morning, the WINE code-base is now in a freeze up to version 1.0. Initially this code freeze is more of a “code frost” turning away patches that might risk introducing new regressions that would set back the 1.0 release date, but eventually the code will become frozen…

CrossOver Games vs Wine 0.9.58

Posted on April 8th, 2008 in Wine by freesoftnews

Here is the first of a two part post of benchmarks that compare the performance of CrossOver Games 7.0 against Wine 0.9.58, I ran four test this round and they are 3DMark 2000, 3DMark 2001, 3DMark 2003 and Aquamark 3. I plan to test 3DMark 05/06, GlExcess, Performance test and PCMark for the next post, I thought I would split the benchmarks up and run about half of them now and the latter half for the next post.

15 years in the making, Wine 1.0 is in sight

Posted on March 20th, 2008 in Wine by freesoftnews
Wine

For far longer than any of its developers would care to recall, Wine, the best program to use in Linux to run Windows applications, has been in development. Now, at long last, Wine 1.0 is scheduled to be released.

To be exact, Wine (Wine is not an emulator) 1.0 should appear June 6, on the project’s 15th birthday. While at this point there are 1,229 Windows applications that install and run out of the box, the Platinum applications, using Wine on Linux, only four Microsoft applications – Photoshop CS2, PowerPoint Viewer 97 and 2003, and Word Viewer 97 and 2003, and Excel Viewer 97 and 2003 – are being considered as critical for the 1.0 release. The reason for this, the Wine developers explain in the Wine 1.0 release plan, is that “expanding that list is that each new app adds a huge amount of testing to each release.”
