ICANN Rejects .XXX Top Level Domain, Again

Posted on March 30th, 2007 in News by freesoftnews
News

“After yet another contentious vote on the .xxx concept, ICANN has finally rejected the pornography TLD. The debate has gone on for quite some time, and the 9-5 decision was the third time a decision was reached on the subject. This is the second time the body has ruled against the idea, and is likely the last time we’ll see it come up for vote any time soon. One member abstained from voting. From the article: ‘Many of the board members said they were concerned about the possibility that ICANN could find itself in the content regulation business if the domain name was approved. Others criticized that, saying ICANN should not block new domains over fears like that, noting that local, state and national laws could be used to decide what is pornographic and what is not. Other board members said they believed that opposition to the domain by the adult industry, including Web masters, content providers and others, was proof that the issue was divisive and that .xxx was not a welcome domain.’”

ArsTechnica reports that Quanta, the company manufacturing the XO laptops, has plans to begin selling low-cost budget mobile computers for $200 later this year. ‘According to Quanta president Michael Wang, the company plans to leverage the underlying technologies associated with OLPC’s XO laptop to produce laptop computers that are significantly less expensive than conventional laptops.’ While OLPC plans to sell the laptops in bulk to governments, which will then distribute the hardware to school children, the XO computer itself is not for sale on the open market. These XO-like commercial devices are still something of an unknown, but it has been announced they’ll be using Open Source software.”

A couple of weeks back, I was greeted by the news of a very interesting project having been moved to KDE base. The project in question is a file manager named Dolphin. What is unique about this file manager is that it is light weight, is simple to navigate without overwhelming the Computer neophytes but at the same time does not sacrifice much functionality.

RIP: Community Linux (1991-2007)

Posted on March 29th, 2007 in Linux by freesoftnews
Linux

The idea that Linux is primarily a community-based project based on the work of thousands of independent, idealist hackers died a quiet death at home on March 27.
The proximate cause of death was the Linux Foundation’s naming of its new board of directors. This leading non-profit Linux organization’s board included many Fortune 500 executives from around the world — but not one representative from a purely community-based Linux organization.

GNU News

Comments about the third draft of the GNU General Public License (GPLv3), which was released yesterday, are still coming in. So far, we’ve spoken with Free Software Foundation founder Richard M. Stallman, Linux creator Linus Torvalds, and Bruce Lowry, director of global public relations for Novell. Their reactions offer some new perspectives and at least one possible sign of movement toward consensus. Together, they also highlight the issues that are likely to dominate discussion of the draft in the days to come.

The Future of Linux is in Schools, Not in the Office

Posted on March 29th, 2007 in Linux by freesoftnews
Linux

“I have been watching the trends being set forth by Linux vendors for sometime now. While keeping a close eye on public reactions, I have seen great reaction from the educational sector, while observing lukewarm results from the office space.

“Much of this, I suspect, is that schools are looking at a tighter bottom line than we see with much of the world’s leading corporations. With this in mind, I believe that concessions are made when something does not work exactly as they might like. Would it not make sense that for most educational institutions cost trumps minor inconvenience? But just how flexible are today’s schools and will they indeed, become the catalyst that Linux needs to become a household name…?”

Mount an Ext2 or Ext3 Partition in Windows

Posted on March 29th, 2007 in Howtos, Linux, Microsoft, Programming by freesoftnews
Howtos Linux Microsoft Programming

“There are different ways of sharing files between GNU/Linux and Windows. Mostly we make use of the services of a FAT32 (or FAT16) partition which can be read and written to by both Linux and Windows. The disadvantage of using a FAT partition for sharing files between Windows and GNU/Linux is that you are forced to reserve a part of disk space solely for sharing files. But this is just one of the number of file sharing methods available for people who wish to dual boot between the two OSes.

“Another method which comes to my mind is to use the new stable release of ntfs-3g module which allows you to mount an NTFS partition as read-write in GNU/Linux…”
