If you have followed my articles on LDAP, you know we began looking at objectClasses in the last installment back in March. Since that time, I haven’t written much more about directory servers. I began contemplating whether or not to continue the LDAP series because things have changed. Let me explain:

When running a production server, whether it is under heavy load or otherwise, it is very much desirable to keep track of the various physical aspects of the server like the CPU load, memory usage by the services, whether the required services are running, the network traffic and so on. Posted on April 30th, 2007 in Linux by freesoftnews
Linux

A driver development kit provides a build environment, tools, driver samples, and documentation to support driver development for a particular operating system. Linux had always lacked a proper driver development kit. And anybody who intended to write a device driver had to do with sifting through tons of documentation and example source code that other operating systems provide for their

Posted on April 30th, 2007 in Debian by freesoftnews

Sam Hocevar recently became the next Debian Project Leader (DPL), defeating seven other candidates while running on a platform that emphasized ways to improve how project members interact. Hocevar’s election comes at a time when Debian may be losing mindshare among both users and developers to Ubuntu, and looking for ways to improve its efficiencies and to mend internal divisions. Recently, Linux.com discussed these challenges with Hocevar via email in his first interview since his election.

How To Install VMware Server On Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn)

Posted on April 30th, 2007 in Howtos, Ubuntu by freesoftnews
Howtos Ubuntu

This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions about how to install the free VMware Server on an Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) system. With VMware Server you can create and run guest operating systems (”virtual machines”) such as Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, etc. under a host operating system. This has the benefit that you can run multiple operating systems on the same hardware which saves a lot of money, and you can move virtual machines from one VMware Server to the next one (or to a system that has the VMware Player which is also free).

With the release of Microsoft’s new Windows operating system (Vista), more and more people are looking for alternatives to Windows for various reasons. In this tutorial I will show people who are willing to switch to Linux how they can set up a Linux desktop (Debian Etch in this article) that fully replaces their Windows desktop, i.e. that has all software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that runs also on older hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.

“I’ve found a few quirks in the new release, as well as a few interesting changes from CentOS 4. This post just details some of my notes, from the perspective as a server administrator (ie: some of this isn’t relevant for a desktop user)…”
