SeaMonkey 1.1.2 Released

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in Mozilla by freesoftnews
Mozilla

Robert Kaiser writes: “Yesterday, the SeaMonkey project released a new version of its all-in-one Internet suite. SeaMonkey 1.1.2 closes several security vulnerabilities and fixes several smaller problems found in previous versions. With that, SeaMonkey stays at the same level of security as its siblings Firefox and Thunderbird, which are issuing updates for the same problems this week as well.

“Despite a simultaneous release of a last update to the SeaMonkey 1.0 series, SeaMonkey 1.0.9, the project team strongly urges users to upgrade to SeaMonkey 1.1.2, as the old 1.0 series will not be maintained further. The 1.1 series, on the other hand, is being actively maintained and also features some new functionality such as spell checking in web forms and mail tags.

“In addition to users of older SeaMonkey versions, the SeaMonkey team strongly urges users of the old Mozilla Suite and Netscape 4, 6 or 7 to upgrade to SeaMonkey 1.1.2. Those software packages suffer from a large and rising number of security vulnerabilities because they are no longer being maintained. SeaMonkey 1.1.2 is a drop-in replacement, providing the same basic suite functionality plus additional features, without known security problems but with current updates.

Linux powers new Palm ‘Mobile Companion’

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in Hardware, Linux by freesoftnews
Hardware Linux

Palm has used Linux to build what it’s calling a “new class” of mobile device. The Foleo is designed to expand the e-mail, Internet and productivity application capabilities of mobile phones such as the Palm Treo by adding a full-size keyboard and a larger screen.

Very few details about the Foleo are known at this point. Opera, which supplied its Opera 9 browser for the device, has confirmed the Foleo will be based on Linux. For its part, Palm has published a few photos and brief videos of the device, while promising to release more details May 31.

In one video, Palm founder Jeff Hawkins said Palm plans to ship a complete line of Foleo devices supporting a wide variety of mobile phones. He predicts that the Foleo will be more successful than Palm’s original Palm Pilot, which he designed, and more successful than its current Treo smart phones, which he helped design.

Why Novell Must Not Crash and Burn

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in News by freesoftnews
News

Not since SCO has there been a company so reviled by the open source community as Novell following its deal with Microsoft. Already there are some clear signs of the negative effects of that anger: senior coders have left the company; Novell has posted a loss for the most recent quarter; and there are calls for a boycott of Novell products – to say nothing of imminent changes to the GNU GPL that might well nullify the entire Novell-Microsoft deal. Some people are rubbing their hands in glee at the thought of Novell crashing and burning completely, but such a development could actually turn out to be one of the worst things to happen to free software.

How to Fix Slow Fesity Boot For Laptops

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in Ubuntu by freesoftnews
Ubuntu

Feisty has a terrible boot time on laptops compared to server (roughly 3x as long) even though it is a faster computer. You can speedup your boot time from over a minute to roughly 30 seconds by doing the following

Edit the /etc/network/interfaces file using the following command

sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces

Now you need to comment out the wireless card (in this case eth1)

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Retrieving Emails From Remote Servers With fetchmail (Debian Etch)

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in Debian, Howtos by freesoftnews
Debian Howtos

Fetchmail is a program for retrieving emails from remote servers. Imagine you have five email accounts on five different servers. Of course, you don’t want to connect to each of them to get your emails. This is where fetchmail comes into play. If you have a user account on a Linux server, you can make fetchmail download emails from remote servers and put them into just one mailbox (the one of your Linux user), from where you can retrieve them with your email client (e.g. Thunderbird or Outlook).

Firefox 2.0.0.4 and Firefox 1.5.0.12 Security and Stability Update

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in Firefox by freesoftnews
Firefox

As part of Mozilla Corporation’s ongoing stability and security
update process, Firefox 1.5.0.12 and Firefox 2.0.0.4 are now
available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download from http://
getfirefox.com.

Due to the security fixes, we strongly recommend that all Firefox
users upgrade to these latest releases.

Note: We anticipate this to be the last release in the Firefox
1.5.0.x series. Mozilla typically maintains support for previous
releases for six months after a major release. Mozilla has previously
extended the planned end of life for the 1.5.0.x series in order to
accommodate some recent changes in update functionality. Firefox
1.5.0.12 is available for download from http://www.mozilla.com/
firefox/all-older.html but all users are encouraged to upgrade to
Firefox 2.

If you already have Firefox 1.5.0.x or Firefox 2.0.0.x, you will
receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This
update can also be applied manually by selecting “Check for Updates…”
from the Help menu starting later today.

For a list of changes and more information, please review the Firefox
1.5.0.12 Release Notes (http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
releases/1.5.0.12.html) and the Firefox 2.0.0.4 Release Notes (http://
en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/2.0.0.4/releasenotes/).

Over the coming weeks, Mozilla will be presenting 1.5.0.12 users with
a notification message that will offer users a “major update” to
Firefox 2. Upon confirmation, a user’s browser will be upgraded from
1.5.0.12 to 2.0.0.4.

The Secrets of Firefox about:config

Posted on May 30th, 2007 in Firefox, Howtos by freesoftnews
Firefox Howtos

“While Firefox is very customizable, many of its settings aren’t in the Options. Each setting is named and stored as a string, integer, or Boolean in a file called prefs.js and accessed via about:config from the nav bar. Computerworld provides instructions on 20 tweaks for speeding up page loads, making tabs behave, reducing memory drain, and generally making the interface act the way you want it to. Customization also comes through the must-have FF extensions (but be sure to skip these).”
