During a tutorial today on-stage at linux.conf.au, Sun Microsystems and Frontline donated a server to the KDE project, available for shipment within hours. Aaron Seigo, Plasma developer and KDE e.V President, accepted a certificate from Ross Cunningham of Sun Microsystems and David Purdue of Frontline on behalf of the KDE project.

The server is a SunFire X4200, with two AMD Opteron processors, 4GB of memory and a pair of 73GB SAS disks. This generous gift is part of Sun’s demonstrated commitment to supporting Open Source, and thus the KDE project.

Review: OliveBSD turns OpenBSD into very usable live CD

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in BSD by freesoftnews
BSD

The blogroll at Denny’s blog — Denny being committed to running OpenBSD as a full desktop operating system — continues to point me toward interesting spins on the various flavors of BSD. Since OpenBSD is the only one of the three major BSD systems (which include NetBSD and FreeBSD) to run on my VIA C3 Samuel-based test box, I wanted to try one of the projects to which Denny linked right away. I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to run the three main BSD projects and their various offshoots — more trying than doing, actually, but I always want to try what’s new.

Linspire, developer of the commercial Linspire and Freespire flavours of community desktop operating systems, is to offer a custom desktop Linux OS build service to partners.

The company reckons that its Custom OS Build Service will help partners cut time to market and reduce the overall expense of building a desktop Linux operating system.
“With desktop Linux, more and more partners are asking for customisation so they can take control of the OS,” said Larry Kettler, president and chief executive at Linspire.

Multiple unpatched vulnerabilities in open source CMS Mambo

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in Bugs, PHP, Software by freesoftnews
Bugs PHP Software

SecurityFocus has on Monday reported vulnerabilities in the open source content management system Mambo, which could be exploited by attackers to view confidential information or compromise a system. Four flaws have been found, and as yet no fix has been issued.

The mambots/editors/mostlyce/jscripts/tiny_mce/filemanager/connectors/php/connector.php script fails to correctly filter the content of the file[NewFile][tmp_name] parameter, so that crafted arguments can be used to delete files such as configuration.php on the server. If the administrator has not deleted or renamed the Mambo installation directory, it is even possible to load a remote database by uploading a manipulated configuration file. Attackers could then load arbitrary content into the CMS. For the attack to succeed, the image manager must, however, be located in the web server’s root directory.

Seamlessly integrate XP into Linux with SeamlessRDP

Today users have many choices for combining Linux and Windows on the
same machine. You can go with a traditional dual-boot system in which
the operating systems reside on different disk partitions but share a
common partition for files, or you can use an emulator such as Wine, which lets you install Windows applications right in your Linux system. Virtualization programs, such as those from VMware,
bring you closer to the more ideal solution of using both systems at

First look at Ulteo Desktop

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in Linux by freesoftnews
Linux

Using VNC to remotely access your desktop, applications, and documents sounds like a great solution when you are out and about, but it has a few significant drawbacks: you have to leave your machine turned on, the VNC protocol is not secure, and often you need a dedicated VNC client to access your desktop. Ulteo, the company started by Gaël Duval of Mandriva fame, is set to offer an alternative solution. Ulteo gives you access to a full-fledged KDE desktop hosted on the company’s own servers while taking care of the behind-the-scenes stuff. While the service is still in beta and by invitation only, I had a chance to take it for a spin, and I found it promising.

Free online desktop came to life with FLOSS

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in News, OpenSource, Software by freesoftnews
News OpenSource Software

Back in 1999, free software believer Joshua Rand and his friend Oscar Mondragon were talking about the changes they predicted were coming for the Internet. Not long after that, the bubble burst and things did change, for the worst, many said. “We didn’t subscribe to that theory,” Rand says. “We saw the Internet becoming a platform for applications and services long before the term Web 2.0 was coined. With the growth and proliferation of things like Web-based email, the next logical step was, why not everything else? Why not more personal productivity tools and office tools?” That was the beginning of Sapotek.

Could Pandora open up Linux games?

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in Hardware, Linux by freesoftnews
Hardware Linux

A stealth-mode startup is readying a Linux-based handheld gaming device with WiFi, USB, and a 4.3-inch 800×480 touchscreen. The “Pandora,” headquartered at OpenPandora.org for now, runs Linux on a next-generation ARM SoC with integrated OpenGL 2.0 compliant graphics processor.

Powered by a lithium-ion battery, Pandora measures 5.5 x 3.3 x 1.1 inches — slightly smaller than Nintendo’s DS Lite, or GamePark Holdings’s Linux-based GP2X player, from which it arguably evolved. In terms of processing power, its designers claim Pandora will compare to Nintendo’s GameCube, a non-mobile gaming platform.

Celestia 1.5.0 released

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in Software by freesoftnews
Software

Celestia is an open source application for 3D visualization of space, from structures as small as spacecraft or as vast as galaxy clusters. After nearly two years of development since the last release, version 1.5.0 is now available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. This is the biggest update of Celestia ever, with significant improvements in rendering quality, accuracy, and flexibility. Celestia 1.5.0 uses OpenGL 2.0 shaders extensively. Shaders are used to compute atmospheric scattering effects, giving a much more realistic appearance to planets with atmospheres. A Lunar-Lambert photometric model was introduced to more accurately model the reflectance characteristics of dust covered bodies such as the moon. Per-pixel lighting effects are used for better looking specular surfaces.
