2008.0 beta still in progress

Posted on March 31st, 2008 in Gentoo by freesoftnews
Gentoo

The 2008.0 beta is roughly a month behind the original tentative schedule. A number of factors contributed to this, including the migration to new release processes, the usual delays that affect most open-source projects, and the death of a close relative of our developers Chris Gianelloni and Chrissy Fullam.

Work on the first beta is still underway, and we expect to release it soon.

WordPress 2.5 Review

Posted on March 31st, 2008 in PHP, Software by freesoftnews
PHP Software

I have been blogging for many years. During that time I have used many other platforms including hosted software from BlogCity. TypePad, and Blogger. I also used Moveable Type briefly and a highly customized version of Joomla! (before that MamboCMS). Last fall I switched to WordPress as my primary blog platform. Though I haven’t been bowled over by WordPress I have come to the conclusion that it is the best blogging platform for me because it’s easy-to-use, has the widest variety of features, extensible, and it’s open source (with a thriving community of developers– over 90 developers were credited with contributing to this release).

Yesterday the long awaited and somewhat delayed WordPress 2.5 was released. Today, I updated my installation today and though I had a few problems the upgrade to the new version was definitely worth it.

Bad Security Week for Apple

Posted on March 31st, 2008 in Apple by freesoftnews
Apple

Public embarrassment at a hacking contest and vulnerability disclosures for a new browser made for a discouraging week for Mac security folks.

It was one security embarrassment after another for Apple the week of March 24.

It began at the CanSecWest show, where the annual hacker contest challenged attendees to compromise a Vista system, a Ubuntu Linux system and a MacBook Air. The first day was reserved for preauthentication attacks and would have netted $20,000, but nobody took the prize.

On the second day, attackers were allowed to use default-installed client applications. Within minutes of the opening of the second day, the Mac was hijacked by security researcher Charlie Miller, who won the machine and a $10,000 prize for his efforts. Miller attacked the brand new Safari 3.1 browser through a new vulnerability, the details of which he declined to provide. The Vista and Ubuntu boxes survived the day.

BSDCan Travel Grant Application Deadline is tomorrow!

Posted on March 31st, 2008 in BSD by freesoftnews
BSD

The deadline for submitting travel grant applications for BSDCan 2008 through The FreeBSD Foundation is tomorrow, April 1.

The FreeBSD Foundation will be providing a limited number of travel
grants to individuals requesting assistance to attend BSDCan 2008. Please fill out and submit the Travel Grant Request Application at
www.freebsdfoundation.org/documents/ by April 1, 2008 to apply for this
grant.

We have increased our travel grant budget for 2008! Now we have the
resources to help send more FreeBSD developers to conferences. We still
ask you to look to your employers first for sponsorship or cost-splitting.

Also, to be considered for the grant, you must provide a detailed
justification for attending this conference in the application. Please
describe, not only your purpose for attending, but how the FreeBSD
project and community will benefit from you attending this conference.

Please include only costs that you would like the Foundation to reimburse in the application. If there are other sponsors covering some portion of your expenses, please include that in your application, too.

We will not accept applications after April 1, 2008.

Thank You,

The FreeBSD Foundation

Have you ever wondered what are the reasons behind Windows Vista crashes? I’m sure you did! Now the folks from Ars Tehnica revealed that in the 158 page pack of emails that was released as part of the Vista Capable lawsuit, there is information indicating that sometime in 2007, 30% of Vista crashes happened due to Nvidia drivers. Why GIMP is Better than Adobe Photoshop

Posted on March 30th, 2008 in Software by freesoftnews
Software

I’m no graphics professional, but like probably most of you, I do need to edit photos from time to time. I used Adobe Photoshop before since it is the most widely used image manipulating software. But when I started using Linux, things changed.

Since GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is included by default in most Linux distros, I had no other choice but to try it. I then became more and more comfortable using it that I completely forgot about Photoshop. I know that I can still install Photoshop in Linux through software virtualization, but no thanks.

Downloading and installing Thunderbird extensions

Posted on March 30th, 2008 in Howtos by suvi

Extensions are one of the major selling points for Firefox. No other browser can match the sheer volume of third-party mini applications and enhancements.

Most Firefox users are aware of the concept of extensions, but not as many people know that Extensions (and Themes) are available for its email client cousin Thunderbird as well.

First of all, head over to the Thunderbird Add-ons site in your web browser. It is almost exactly the same as the Firefox Add-ons site and works in largely the same way.

How to Split apache Logs With vlogger in debian etch

Posted on March 30th, 2008 in Howtos by suvi

Vlogger is a little piece of code borned to handle dealing with large amounts of virtualhost logs. It’s bad news that apache can’t do this on its own. Vlogger takes piped input from apache, splits it off to separate files based on the first field. It uses a file handle cache so it can’t run out of file descriptors. It will also start a new logfile every night at midnight, and maintain a symlink to the most recent file. For security, it can drop privileges and do a chroot to the logs directory.
