Monthly News – May 2015

Many thanks to all the people who donated to Linux Mint. Donations are lower than last year but they’re still pretty high. We also have more developers than before (which is great) so we adjusted our budget accordingly to ensure they wouldn’t see a drop. This budget is there thanks to your efforts to support our distribution, so a big big thank you to all the people involved in funding us, donors, sponsors and also to our partners.

A preview of the MintBox Mini was posted on Segfault at http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2015/05/mintbox-mini-preview/. The mini-computer is very cute and surprisingly small in size :)

MintBox Mini

Beta-access to Cinnamon 2.6 was given last week to Rebecca and Betsy users via the Romeo repositories. Many of you took the initiative to help us test the new desktop environment and thanks to your feedback many bugs were fixed early. If you want to join them, please visit http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2015/05/early-access-cinnamon-2-6-in-romeo/.

In the next couple of days Cinnamon 2.6 will be released officially and it will then reach the Betsy and Rafaela repositories. Its list of new features will also be announced. I know some people were excited by the new look and feel of the settings when testing it, but there’s much more than initially catches the eye, so we’ll detail all of that :)

An example of the new Cinnamon settings

MATE 1.10 is almost completely labeled upstream but still not officially released. Packaging started and we’re planning to add a couple of things in time for it to join Betsy and Rafaela as well.

Work continues on MDM. The display manager is now able to unlock sessions via both consolekit and logind (and does it more smoothly than before), to display avatars on systems using encrypted home directories and to work with infinality fonts.

Work is also planned on the Mint tools. We gathered a lot of bug reports and great ideas from you on many of them, so we’ll try to make as many improvements as we can there as well.

Upgrading LMDE (from UP8 to “Betsy”)

The upgrade path is now open. LMDE 1 “Debian” users can upgrade to LMDE 2 “Betsy” by following this tutorial:

http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2013

As always, make sure to read everything and don’t hesitate to connect to the IRC while performing the upgrade.

One important note among the warnings: Make sure to disable Romeo prior to upgrading. Cinnamon 2.6 and MATE 1.10 will hit it very soon, they’re not fully stable yet. If you want to test them, it’s better to enable Romeo post-upgrade so they don’t interfere with the upgrade.

Monthly News – April 2015

Apologies for posting late this month. LMDE 2 “Betsy” was released. I know many LMDE 1 users are eagerly waiting for us to announce an upgrade path to Betsy so I’ll keep these news short and go back to working on that :)

MATE 1.10 is being labeled as we speak and should be released very shortly.

Cinnamon 2.6 will reach feature-freeze mid-May and become stable at the end of the month. It’s already full of improvements and new features but there are a couple of very important sub-projects we wanted to put in it: The ability for users to change whether Cinnamon works with consolekit or logind without recompiling, a queue for file operations in Nemo so they can be performed one after the other, actual screensavers in cinnamon-screensaver (we’ve got support for xscreensaver and webkit screensavers already, we need to work on the configuration UI)… etc.

Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” is planned for the end of the June, with an RC release mid-June.

Many thanks to our sponsors and to all the people who donated to us. Special thanks also to the artists who answered our call for help last month.

PrivateInternetAccess becomes Linux Mint’s main sponsor

I’m happy to announce that PrivateInternetAccess is now the primary sponsor for Linux Mint.

PrivateInternetAccess, PIA, is one of the world’s leading VPN providers. The company has been praised for their policy to never log data and for offering some of the lowest subscription prices available. PIA offers 3,180 servers and 16 countries to choose from as well as unlimited bandwidth and up to 5 devices per customer account.

Many of our in-house developers and marketing staff utilize Linux Mint as a desktop.  It is great because everything just works.
We’re big fans of open source and sponsor quite a bit of projects as well as other types of organizations that fight for privacies, civil liberties, etc.  Since some of us were already using Linux Mint, it made sense!

Among other Open Source projects, PIA also sponsors Freenode and GNOME.

We’re proud to welcome PIA as our new sponsor and very grateful for the financial help they’re giving us.

LMDE 2 “Betsy” MATE released!

The team is proud to announce the release of LMDE 2 “Betsy” MATE.

LMDE 2 “Betsy” MATE Edition

LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is a very exciting distribution, targeted at experienced users, which provides the same environment as Linux Mint but uses Debian as its package base, instead of Ubuntu.

LMDE is less mainstream than Linux Mint, it has a much smaller user base, it is not compatible with PPAs, and it lacks a few features. That makes it a bit harder to use and harder to find help for, so it is not recommended for novice users.

LMDE is however slightly faster than Linux Mint and it runs newer packages. Life on the LMDE side can be exciting. There are no point releases in LMDE 2, except for bug fixes and security fixes base packages stay the same, but Mint and desktop components are updated continuously. When ready, newly developed features get directly into LMDE 2, whereas they are staged for inclusion on the next upcoming Linux Mint 17.x point release. Consequently, Linux Mint users only run new features when a new point release comes out and they opt-in to upgrade to it. LMDE 2 users don’t have that choice, but they also don’t have to wait for new packages to mature and they usually get to run them first. It’s more risky, but more exciting.

Important info:

  • Login and password for the live session
  • Gtk theme and icons failing to load
  • Multi-core and multi-CPU support in 32-bit kernel
  • Modprobe errors, warning messages during the boot sequence
  • Yumi multiboot

Make sure to read the “Release Notes” to be aware of important info or known issues related to this release.

System requirements:

  • x86 processor (Linux Mint 64-bit requires a 64-bit processor. Linux Mint 32-bit works on both 32-bit and 64-bit processors).
  • 512MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
  • 9GB of disk space (20GB recommended).
  • Graphics card capable of 800×600 resolution (1024×768 recommended).
  • DVD drive or USB port

Upgrade instructions:

We’re currently working on an upgrade path for LMDE 1 users.

Announcements will be made on this blog when the upgrade is ready.

Linux Mint 17.2 codenamed ‘Rafaela’

The second 17.x point release will be Linux Mint 17.2 codename ‘Rafaela’.

Rafaela is a feminine form of Raphael, which is of Hebrew origin and which meaning is “God has healed”.

The name Raphael is attested as far back as c. 1350 BCE. It was made popular by many illustrious characters and historical figures:

  • An archangel in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
  • An Italian master painter and architect in the High Renaissance
  • A Spanish tennis player
  • A Ninja Turtle :)

Linux Mint 17 and Linux Mint 17.1 users will have the choice to upgrade or not, and that upgrade will be both easy and safe.

Get A Global Menu In MATE 1.8 With TopMenu (PPA For Ubuntu And Linux Mint)

One of the most requested MATE features is the addition of a global menu applet. However, such an applet (called TopMenu) already exists, though it’s not available in any PPA and that prevents many Ubuntu / Linux Mint users from installing it.To make it easier to install, I’ve packed TopMenu in a PPA for Ubuntu […]
